Cracked lip - alternative cures

Aparecium · 24/02/2025 22:12

I've got a crack in my lip and I'm struggling to heal it. The trouble is that I'm allergic to fragrances and beeswax, which pretty much all the intensive/lip-repair products contain.

I've been using the lip balms that are safe for me, but it's just not healing. Can anyone suggest something alternative that might work?

Nipple cream, the purple one

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/02/2025 22:14

Sudocream?

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 24/02/2025 22:15

Lanolin nipple cream! Absolute lifesaver.

Mountainfrog · 24/02/2025 22:16

you might need some canesten as well, could explain why it’s not healing

AliceMcK · 24/02/2025 22:17

2nd sudocrem.

TheGirlWhoLived · 24/02/2025 22:18

Yep you want a massive thick layer of sudocrem, overnight or in the house, then as soon as you can’t see the sudocrem, put it on again, it’ll take a couple of days max I reckon

FinallyHere · 24/02/2025 22:19

And drinking all.the.water alongside the creme.

Check that you're not getting toothpaste on your lips, wash it off if you do. As well as doing this I find laneige lip mask really good and I have very sensitive lips.

ThankyouBakedP0tato · 24/02/2025 22:27

Blistex relief cream (in the small metal tube) is the only one that works for me.

If you can find it, it's out of stock everywhere I look at the moment 😟

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 24/02/2025 22:29

I came on to say lanisol too (nipple cream in the purple tube). It's made up of lanolin and works wonders.

My son get these cracks from time to time. Caneston, and sudo. Keep it dry.

La Neige absolutely ruined DD’s lips and is the last thing that OP should be using if hers are dry and sensitive. Awful stuff that contains exfoliating acids which dehydrate the lips to make you keep applying (& buying) more.

Go to bed with a slug of Savlon plastered over.

Dont lick your lips!

In the morning hopefully it will be like magic and half way healed.

POSTC123 · 24/02/2025 22:40

And stop using lip balms!

In the day put nothing except straight hylauronic acid. Can buy a bottle from the ordinary.

MCIdaughter · 24/02/2025 22:44

I'm prone to splits on my lip like this. I had one that simply wouldn't heal and made eating and speaking again agony. A pharmacist advised me to use the smallest amount of over the counter HC45 / 0.5% hydrocortisone cream. Once a day for the shortest time. It'll start healing fast then just some regular lip balm from then on. Made sense and worked for me. I have eczema and often get splits like this on my fingers. I use hydrocortisone and slightly stronger steroids creams then, only until the cut starts to heal then emollients after that.

Ilovemyshed · 24/02/2025 22:48

Vaseline

Aparecium · 24/02/2025 22:59

Canesten? Would never occur to me. But I'll give it a try.

I've got some hyaluronic acid serum. I'll give it a try as well.

And I've also got HC ointment and creams - because I have skin allergies, durrr! Why didn't that occur to me.

Thanks for the ideas!

I've never found a Blistex that is fragrance free.

Sudocrem contains beeswax.

I remember trying Lansino on my lips and on my hands when I was breastfeeding. Yuck yuck yuck. Just too concentrated. Sticky and greasy.

I accept that the Lansinoh isn’t very appealing but honestly after months of trying every lip balm, healing cream etc on the market it’s the only thing that has really helped DD. Everything else made her worse. You only need a very sparing amount so it shouldn’t be too sticky or greasy.

rewardacrosstrack · 25/02/2025 00:02

I have lots of skin allergies so can't use lanolin, fragrance or anything with limonene which seems to be in just about everything. Vaseline used regularly for a couple of days is the only thing that helped my cracked lip.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/02/2025 00:09

I get cracks at the side of my mouth sometimes and I find germolene helps.

In general I think Vaseline, the stuff in little blue pots, is better than lip salve in a tube , although I use that outside of the house.

Trallers · 25/02/2025 00:13

If you can find hydrocolloid plasters and can tolerate one on your lip overnight then I'd recommend that. It's the only thing that works when I have a recurring lip split in the winter.

TheGirlWhoLived · 25/02/2025 08:14

I’m fairly sure its a synthetic bees wax as it’s just the lanolin (from sheep’s wool) that makes it non-vegan

obvs you could be allergic to synthetic bees wax too but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aparecium · 25/02/2025 10:50

I'm not actually allergic to beeswax. I'm allergic to propolis, which often contaminates beeswax. If I'm to use a beeswax product I patch test first and never use it on sore skin until I've used it for a while without any problems on healthy skin. So now is not the time to trial anything beeswax.
