HELP, poorly dd

DD had temp of 40.6 this morning so took her to docs. He said she has tonsillitus. Got antib's.
she had some at 1230. Doc also said fluids and calpol every 4 hrs. At 1220 she threw up the calpol, so I gave 1 spoon at 3, as she is soooo hot. Just took temp again and it is 41.17 and I am a bit worried. She is sipping water but wont have anything else, not milkshakes, lollies or anything. She is SO HOT.

Should I do as doc said, dunk her in a bath or take her in again or what??

Have you got nurofen junior or other ibuprofen for children in the house? It's better for reducing temperatures imo, but can be taken alongside calpol without any harm being done. It also lasts longer between doses.

We have some calprofen which I have comsidered giving, but is it ok with calpol AND the antibiotics??

Ibuprofen works better at reducing a fever then calpol, you can give her both, 2 hours apart. How old is she?

A wet flannel and a fan should help aswell. Avoid a cold bath, she'll go into shock.

BandofMothers · 10/05/2008 15:56

But can they have it with antib's??
The doc said a luke warm bath, am off to get the fan and she wont have a flannel or anything, what a time to be awkward, when I can't be mad at her cos she looks SO miserable

Yes fine with antibiotics. Both of them. And together.

So to clarify - ibuprofen+paracetamol+abs are OK!

And agree - tepid bath, fan, flannel etc etc etc. What about a tepid paddling pool if you are somewhere where it is nice and sunny?

avenanap · 10/05/2008 16:00

You can take paracetamol and childrens ibuprofen with antibiotics, just remember to alternate them.

Just wipe her down with the flannel, the water off it will cool her down. I do recommend that you give NHS Direct a call, this is a high fever and she should be assessed again. I hope she's feeling better. Give her a dose of ibuprofen now, if she's vomiting give it to her in little bits. She'll still need fluids, again, in little bits often.

How old is she?

BandofMothers · 10/05/2008 16:01

Doc said I have to keep her out of the sun til she's better, as it will make her hotter, she doesn't want flannel, might try that again tho.

She is now sat with her face about 3 inches from the fan. She is so poorly, Oh I hate when they get ill.

Thanks for the speedy replies guys.

Yes, agree - ok to take with antibiotics.

BandofMothers · 10/05/2008 16:03

She has been vomiting, she is sipping her water, but that is all. DH had to turn the fan down as it made her chilly, which is good I guess.

Sips are good, especially if she's vomiting. She may need some rehydration solution aswell if she's been vomiting all day, it will replace the electrolytes. The fan should be making her chilly, pop it on rotate so it's not focusing on one part of her. You could try some ice in her drink. Check the temp hourly, if it's not going down after the ibuprofen call NHS Direct, just remember to give it a hour and a half to start working.

I hope she's feeling better soon

BandofMothers · 10/05/2008 16:12

OKey Dokey, had calprofen now, and the fan on.
I have some rehydration stuff which I will try, but she can be very fussy and I would rather she had water than not drink it cos it tasted funny. DD2 refused it pointblank when she was poorly a while ago
