Sun lotion for children with Exzma? recommendations please

Wolfgirl · 10/05/2008 11:52

Hi there, both my children have reacted to a L'Oreal sun lotion this week, and are covered in red rash/pimples.

DS gets exzmas quite bad whilst I thought DD only mildly - but both have reacted to this sun lotion.

It does not say sensitive, so Im wondering if a sensitive one will do the trick, or is there one specifically for kids with exzma? Does anyone know? we are off on hols in June and would like to make sure I have the right stuff for them

thanks in advance

The most gentle cream I have found is made by Lavera. It is a SPF40 sun milk.

Also worth looking at Green People.

Or ask in good health food shops as they will stock much more natural creams than the big brands.

misdee · 10/05/2008 12:21

have given up with suncreams.

we are just off to the lakes.

dd1 in sleeved t-shirt, short leggings and wide hat. dd2 in simuilar but with cropped jeans instead. both suffer with eczema and have reacted to all we have tried over the years.

i am going to be seeking out a shaded area today.

ratbunny · 10/05/2008 12:43

I second the Green People. I have only used it a couple of times - I tend to keep ds out of the sun instead - but he hasnt reacted.

Wolfgirl · 10/05/2008 12:44

I guess Im lucky in that both of them have olivey med. skin so will tan nicely - but still - factor 40 to start then work down.

I have T-shirts to the ready, the lot really

Enjoy the lakes misdee - very nice! I love it up there

TooTicky - thanks for the tips and yes, I will try them. I will take a look at the link you left too..

thanks ladies

Get your doctor to prescribe them E45 suncream. It did the trick with my dd2 and he also prescribed E45 normal cream for general moisturising purposes.

Spidermama · 10/05/2008 13:45

Wolfgirl this happened to my ds too. I'll be taking up some of the suggestions on here but frankly, until his skin has completely cleared up, I'll just be keeping him in the shade, covered up, cream-free.

Wolfgirl · 10/05/2008 14:29

Thanks PestoMonster. Im seeing my doctor this week, so will ask him (will also check out the Green site though)

Ive also heard that sea water is good for exzma - anyone else heard this? Heck, they might get cured LOL

There's another thread about this here with quite a few recommendations.

thegrowlygus · 10/05/2008 14:39

This website is very helpful for sunscreens as well as eczema in general

eczema.org

We have found sunsense to be very good - the toddler milk (recommended from this site - and now much cheaper than it was when you couldn't get it except in Australia)

Wolfgirl · 10/05/2008 14:55

thanks bran. I cant beleive how expensive they are, grief! I expect one could say ah yes.... but they are worth it, which would be true, but the size of the bottles are so small too.

sorry - sounding off a bit eh! One tube would barely last week for one child, and I have two to smother!

think I will check and see what the doctor suggests. either way, I have to get something and if it costs that much.... so be it

The sunsense toddler roll on stuff is about 5.99 for a 50ml bottle - doesn't sound much but it lasted us all summer last year (admittedly not much sun!!) and only one boy to cover.

thegrowlygus · 10/05/2008 15:55

BTW - wolfgirl - I am a GP and that is the website I use to advise patients (the eczema.org one) and it was recommended to me by my GP who is a dermatology specialist GP. Might save you a trip to the docs!

aha we are back from stanborough. bagged the only shadey spot by the river. dd's had laods of fun, no sign of any redness. the hats stayed on till about 3pm when each of them took a tumble and ended up wet.

all now bathed and relaxing. exhausted them. maybe we'll all get a lie in.

Wolfgirl · 10/05/2008 16:59

Im just about to bath my two, they stink LOL we have had a great relaxing day in the garden. I have just had a very expensive electric awning erected over our patio - and by heck it came into its own today. We have the sun beam into our back diner area ALL day, and no shade till about 3pm. Took a bit of persueading DH to have it, cos he LOVES hot sun, but even he has agreed it is brilliant.

glad you had a good day too misdee, I love going to the river, reminds me of when I was a kid, nets and stickle backs LOL

Thanks for the site thegrowlygus, thats great. I shall take heed!

OK, bath time and garden clear up time. We are out for a friends 40th tonight, so no cooking - ye ha!!!

Coppertone Waterbabies SPF 50 works beautifully on my dd and in fact it's the only thing I'll put on myself as well. DD used to have cracked and bleeding excema and we woudl go to sunny places many times a year and have to put on sun lotion because her skin is so pale and we never had a rash with it. Occasionally if I'm not paying attention another parent might put something else on her and at least half the time it gives her a rash. In fact I seem to remember L'oreal being one of the main offenders. Nivea always gave me a rash as a child. The Waterbabies is PABA free, not greasy and not too smelly either.

Astrophe · 10/05/2008 17:23

My DD came out in pimply rash last from suncream this week as well (it was soltan kids) - I sent DH to boots for a new one, and he returned with Simple Kids 50+, and she has used it today and been fine. I think it was about £8 for a 200ml bottle.

Astrophe · 10/05/2008 17:24

should have said, Simple hypoallergenic Kids 50+

Wolfgirl · 10/05/2008 18:24

Mmmmm.... I took to clearing out a load of old suntan lotions from the shed today.... after this episode with their skin, Im not taking any more chances. I certainly dont want them scratching till they bleed. DS has been scratching badly, but so far no blood.

just scrubbed them in the bath.... they objected to it tbh, but better get it off than they sweat with it on all night... make things worse.
