Is it normal for a baby to be ill for 6 weeks

My son (just turned 1) has had D&V on and off since the last few days in March, when he started nursery.
The pattern is:
One day of suspect nappies
Next day, vomit in the morning, diarrhoea that day
Repeat for about another 2 days, when the vomiting stops
Diarrhoea becomes less frequent, stops after about a week
During this time, he would of course be off nursery. Whenh better, we'd send him again, 24/48 hours later the cycle would start again
Near the end of april he developed an infection which he was on ABs for. In the next cycle he got a fever again, but was managed by calpol that timre.
His sleep has become completely screwed. He's never been a good eater and has always been skinny, but he's eaten next to nothing in this period and is skin and bones.
Doctor/HV/nursery all say this is normal - "keep him hydrated"
What do you lot think?

I would be concerned. A nasty bout of d&v can take a while to get over - I think my dd2 had diarrhea for one month before it went completely. For about two months I had to be very careful with the food she ate - sticking to very plain foods.

She also had a series of illnesses which left her skin and bones and in hospital for three nights. It is very worrying when they just don't seem to pick up after an illness, and then get another one on top of it. I kept her home from creche for two months - but I was fortunate to be able to do this.

I wonder if your ds has some sort of food intolerance which is causing the diarrhea? I would go back to your docotr and discuss it with them. And also discuss vitamin supplements - I don't normally like them - but if he's becoming run down through not eating, then they may be needed.

thanks for your post. Will ask about vit drops - I hadn;'t thouhgt of that.
Food intolerance: we had considered that, but he doesn't have anything now that he didn't have 6 months ago, iyswim. Plus, when he's well we try to feed him up - cream, yoghurt, bread...he seems fine on that until he goes to nurery again. If I go back to the dr i will definitely ask though.
Forgot to say, when he had his infection he had urine & stool samples, both clear.

It's possible to have a temporary dairy intolerance caused by the d&v. I don't know much about that though.

What are they feeding him at the nursery? How is he at the nursery - does he get plenty of time to rest there?

StealthPolarBear · 10/05/2008 11:01

right, yes i think somemne else haws mentioned that, brain fried, soory.

Feeding him at nursery - very little!! trouble is atm all he will eat (when he eats) is yoghurt and porridge and buttered toast. might have to look into dairy free options. But would that make him vomit again?

We've taken him out of nursery because of this & a few other issues
