Hi, I’m having a lower molar removed at 9am on Monday. Will I be ok to go back to work after? I’ve never even had a filling before so no idea what to expect… thank you

No,you can’t go bad to work straight after if you are a teacher. My dentist always tells me to rest for 24 hours (I have had a lot of teeth extracted!).You need to make sure a clot forms over the socket to prevent dry socket.I have never had one thank goodness.

When the anaesthetic wears off it may be painful.Last thing you will want to do is talk.

Thanks for all the advice, though I’m really nervous now! At the moment it’s not hurting at all so I don’t even want it doing whereas when it was infected a few weeks ago I’d have done anything to have had it out…

This.....oh yes, and good luck!

I thought nothing of having a tooth out (prep for braces) but after the procedure I ended up shaking uncontrollably at home from what I assume was a type of shock. Glad I didn't have to go into the office!

I did, I had bottom molar taken out at 2pm went to work for 7 for a 12.5hr nightshift. Was still slightly bleeding still but was manageable. If I don't work I don't get paid so I had to x

I did, it was fine but tried to drink a can of Diet Coke out of the can on the way in and failed, the Novocain pastas a while

I would plan to take the rest of the day off for all the reasons previous posters have mentioned. Also the adrenaline in local anaesthetic doesn’t agree with me, makes me very jittery then I totally crash and just need to sleep as it wears off.

I had 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out under GA at 9am in the morning. I was fine by the afternoon with no lasting effects!. So I guess it varies.

I had one wisdom tooth out under GA in hospital and was very much not fine! I was sick that night and really shouldn't have gone to work the next day, but I was employed by an agency with no sick leave at the time.

sakura06 · 22/02/2025 21:41

I had one out and had the rest of the day off and the next day. It then got infected and I had to take another day as I felt horrendous. You will need to rest and allow the clot to form.

rosemarble · 22/02/2025 21:43

I had a molar extracted in Dec. Went straight back to work, but this is an office in my garden where I could sulk work quietly. I did email a colleague to postpone a zoom call.

JoyousEagle · 22/02/2025 22:09

I was going to say yes, I could have done this no problem, but I have an office job and can wfh. If you're a teacher I'd say no, my jaw was sore (impacted wisdom tooth removal), so talking was uncomfortable and I just wanted to keep my mouth still.

GG1986 · 22/02/2025 22:56

I would go back on the Tuesday. You will be numb for a few hours and also sometimes the socket can ooze a bit of blood afterwards, so not ideal if you are teaching and talking a lot.

OnTheBoardwalk · 22/02/2025 23:02

I'm MN hardcore and had every single tooth, top and bottom, taken out at 9 am and was back at work at 10

3 infections is awful, I can imagine the pain you were in. You need to get this done asap

as a teacher talking in front of a class I’d say you should absolutely plan and take the full day off

SpoonyEagle · 22/02/2025 23:04

I had 2 wisdom teeth out at 4pm and went to work my 12 hour night shift at 8pm!
I've never had time off to have teeth out, the thought have never entered my head about having time off work

Musicaltheatremum · 23/02/2025 09:07

I had my left upper 6 removed halfway through my GP morning surgery. I re jigged the appointment times and my coffee break(aka catch up break) then went in to see a further 6 patients and house calls. It was fine.

cansu · 23/02/2025 09:12

No you need to go home, rest and take painkillers.
