Any guesses what's going on with my toes?

I'm going to mention it to the doctor when I'm there next week for something else, but it doesn't seem urgent enough to warrant a whole appointment.

A couple off months back, I stubbed my (bare) left foot hard enough to take the skin off the end of the middle toe, and create an attractive black nail on the one next to it. It was sore, but it healed. However, since then, the area around the nail on my middle toe has been really itchy. Not painful or sore, just driving me mad itchy.

Bizarre thing is, the middle toe on my right foot (which hasn't been injured) has also become itchy around the nail! I could explain the injured foot, but for the middle toes on both feet to be itchy in exactly the same way is just odd.

No new shoes and I wear different ones regularly, so not in one pair for long, not on my feet all day, rarely wear socks (and never at home) as I dislike the feeling of them. Feet otherwise healthy and have never had so much as an ingrown toenail. I'm just curious what on earth could be causing it?

How long have they been itchy and are you stressed at the moment? When I’m stressed I get pompholyx (dishydrotic eczema) on my toes. It itches like buggery before the blisters show up.

Left foot has been a couple of months, right one about 3 weeks. Not particularly stressed, no.

Chilblains?

Chilblains?

Just looking on Google and that looks similar, but I've not really been exposed to extreme cold for any length of time and looks like chilblains would've healed already.

Have you tried athletes foot powder? That can be very itchy

No, I haven't. I thought that mainly affected in between the toes though? I've just been using antihistamine cream to try to help the itching.

As you don't wear socks, a fungal infection could be the culprit here. Nice, moist environment.

Could be. I'm barefoot most of the time to be fair. It's just weird that it's only affecting one toon each foot!

I had athletes food. It was between toes but also on top.

It was unbelievable itchy.

That was also following broken skin where a flip flop rubbed.

I think I need to go and see the pharmacist. I'm at the docs next week anyway but the itching is driving me crazy.

If there are no areas of sore skin -peeling or redness and it’s itching samecareas on both feet then actually I would see the dr as it could be more like neuropathy.i have burning/itching on toes and ball of foot due to this

No, there's no sore or peeling skin. It's a bit red and inflamed looking around both toenails, but I think that's largely from me keep rubbing them because of the itching, mainly when I'm asleep.

I realise this doesn't solve your issue but to help in the meantime, I recommend Eurex anti itching cream, it's magical stuff!

AnxiouslyAwaitingSpring · 21/02/2025 12:17

Also, an anti histamine/anti allergy that contains Loratadine taken before bed (can make you drowsy) will stop the itch completely whilst you're in bed

I've been taking antihistamines, but Eurax is a good call. I can remember that being magic as a kid when I had chickenpox and I'd forgotten it existed! I'll nip round the chemist this afternoon.
