user1469571538 · 20/02/2025 15:01

Hi all,
I have chronic bad breath. I have seen a dentist who says my teeth & gums are healthy. I eat pretty clean diet and drink a lot of water.
problem is as soon as I eat anything my breath stinks.
i have tried avoiding dairy, gluten, onion, garlic etc but no luck.
Tried activated charcoal, probiotics, anti-reflux medication- none of these helped.
any suggestions what else should I check please?
really appreciate your suggestions/help.
thank You

Tonsil stones? Try gargling with warm water and a splash of hydrogen peroxide ans look at nasal irrigation

Got tonsils removed 4 years ago and tried neilmed nasal irritation too, no improvement.

What did your dentist say?

SwisswolvesLilley · 21/02/2025 00:23

Do you floss between your teeth? Try the Tepe brushes and brush inbetween each of your teeth individually and use floss where the brushes won't fit. You'd be surprised how much debris stays stuck there with just a conventional toothbrush.

How do you know you have bad breath? Has someone told you that you do?

AnotherDelphinium · 21/02/2025 00:50

Do you brush your tongue?

I’ve had several (now exs!) who seem to think they don’t need to, no matter how much they’re encouraged to, and it’s vile.

gettingthehangofsewing · 21/02/2025 02:23

Does it smell bad or taste bad? Could it be a nasal drip?

WinterFoxes · 21/02/2025 02:34

Are you on medication? When I was on antidepressants people used to take a step back when I spoke. Close friends made 'subtle' comments like, 'I'm just going to brush my teeth and then I'll come and meet you'. I had great oral hygiene, sucked mints, used mouthwash. When I stopped the medication, the problem vanished

Sinus problems?

Also brushing the tongue is important.

I use the internet dens brushes but I’ve also invested in an irrigator since I’ve had some teeth implants done.

When your mouth is dry (from medications or sinus etc) your breath will likely smell a bit

user1469571538 · 21/02/2025 08:31

When I talk, people cover their nose.
Sometimes people pass on comments like can smell poo.
Also, when I am in a small room or near someone, I can smell my own breath from nose which is like morning breath.

I am not taking any medications at the minute. I brush my tongue and also use tongue cleaner as my tongue has white coating in the morning. I try to clean tongue after every meal.
I have sinus issues but I am not in any medications. May be its because of that. What to do for sinus?

I do use inter dental brushes, Red tepe ones.
But not floss. I will try flossing as well.

Perhaps, see a GP and ask if you should see an ENT specialist. I knew I had a sinus problem, but it wasn’t until I saw an ENT specialist and he had a good look that the extent of it was revealed. The sinuses on each side of my nose - one was partially occluded and the second one was fully occluded. The sinus cavity at the top of my forehead was also occluded if I remember correctly.

Also I had a badly deviated septum, which was not obvious when looking at my nose (the external look of my nose looked very straight to me, internally not so much). The specialist said I had broken my nose at some point in my life. I couldn’t think of when it happened, but he told me it could have even been broken as I was being born.

When the stuff from my sinuses did drip down it tasted foul.

Once they operated to fixed the deviated septum and cleaned out the sinus cavities my nose ran clear and my smelly breath disappeared.

The thing you said about the poo smell could indicate digestive problems though - maybe. I’m not a doctor. But I’d recommend you speak to the GP about that - maybe a gastroenterologist could help.

Meanwhile maybe ask the GP for something to treat your sinuses - a nasal spray perhaps? I use to use a steroid one that was good but that was years ago. There is probably better ones now. And also, have you tried a good mouthwash similar. to the ones dentists use? There’s all sorts. I use this brand which was recommended by my dentist. Here’s a link: Mouth wash Savacol. You can dip clean floss or inter dens brushes into it and it helps clean around your teeth more.

Its bad smell from mouth and nose. I had procedure for deviated septum and removing tonsils. I do have post nasal drip and some sinus issues, so I have been doing nasal irrigation.
I have tried medication to manage acid reflux although I don’t have any symptoms. One of the doctors said its silent reflux.
Seen GP as well. One of the doctors said it could be gut dysbiosis. I have taken probiotics as well.
I have seen ENT, gastro specialists and tried all sorts but not found anything to manage my bad breath.

Just noticed you mention white on your tongue, OP. Could it be possible you have oral thrush? That can cause bad breath.
