Cold sore on tongue? So so worried

Hello,
I am an OCD sufferer and have trauma from losing a baby late term previously. I recieve a lot of professional help regarding this.
My OCD has hooked onto the fear of cold sores. I have banned anyone from kissing my 12 day old baby, including myself. But I can't resist, and sometimes without even registering, I'm running my lips along her cheeks (she is so beautiful).
Today, while eating, I noticed a raised lump on my tongue- its sore when touched and almost feels like a skin tage whichI could pull off. Deep down I feel this is probably a sore taste bud. But my head goes to 'cold sore'. I have never had a cold sore in my life so don't know what one feels or even looks like. I'm now really worried that my newborn has caught this.
There must be thousands of mums with cold sores and newborns and they are okay but struggling a little to calm my fear.
Any reassurence welcomed x

You've probably bit your tongue in your sleep. It may turn into a mouth ulcer. It's definitely not a cold sore.

ThreeMagicNumber · 20/02/2025 15:10

That's not a cold sore just a little ulcer. They aren't contagious. They are quite common post partum and can be caused by hormonal changes, stress, vitamin deficiencies, or dehydration.

Dab it with Bonjela, job done.

ButtofaMonkey · 20/02/2025 15:13

Its the beginning of a small mouth ulcer. Nothing to be concerned about. I used to get them a lot when I was a bit run down/ overtired/ not eating well.

sprigatito · 20/02/2025 15:14

I get those when I'm run down. Sometimes several of them at once. They are painful but fairly short lived. I recommend Anbesol gel rather than Bonjela, it has a good whack of Lidocaine in it which properly relieves the pain.

WonderingWanda · 20/02/2025 15:15

That's not a cold sore. Have you really never had one of those irritated raised taste buds before?

TeaRoseTallulah · 20/02/2025 15:16

Not a cold sore, little bump or ulcer.

ProjectsGalore · 20/02/2025 15:16

I think this is a taste bud that has ended its life. Someone told me once that they kind of raise and then disappear......either way definitely not a cold sore!!!

starryheart · 20/02/2025 15:16

It's a pimple. Old wives tale if you get a pimple on your tongue, you've been telling lies.

CocoPlum · 20/02/2025 15:22

Are you medicated for your OCD? It sounds so sad that you can't kiss your 12 day old baby!

HelenCurlyBrown · 20/02/2025 15:25

Not a cold sore. Kiss your baby and get help for your extreme anxiety.

AOMum14 · 20/02/2025 15:31

Thank you everyone! All of your comments are much appeciated. I have to say to a few comments that I am very aware of my extreme anxiety, hence I highlighted it in my comment.

I agree it is extreme but sadly had been a reaction to an extreme life event. My son died when I was 33 weeks to a condition in which only 6 others have been diagnosed in the world. He was the 7th. This messes with your idea of risk. I am receiving lots of support - medication and therapy - but I'm not perfect and I'm trying. I could be loud crying in a corner with an anxiety attack, which me from a few years ago would have done, but I'm just quietly commenting on mumsnet.

I am personally making the decision not to kiss her face but that does not mean my newborn is deprived of love. She is currently napping on my chest after a good breastfeed - milk drunk 🤣.

I replied on your parenting thread.

Yes it's an ulcer. But OP, with kindness and as a fellow OCD sufferer who knows how debilitating it is...you know that constant reassurance just feeds OCD.

You say you're receiving professional support - is it helping? Have you considered medication? It's been a life changer for me. You need to get a hold of it before it tarnishes your experience as a new mum. Time, and your baby, are precious - you need to be able to enjoy her

DazzyRascale · 20/02/2025 15:34

Sorry just seen you're medicated. Has it taken the edge off things?

Thank you so much for your comment! I agree - reassurence seeking is tough. I seem to have been able to tackle lots of the symptoms but this is the hardest to overcome so far. It's addictive!

I've been on the lowest dose of medication but after speaking to my peri-natal mental help person yesterday, I am upping the dose. I know it helps but decided to decrease the dose in pregnancy for many reasons - one being my awful pregnancy sickness.

It dosent sound like it but I am far calmer this time round than with my first daughter. I can actually sleep this time round and love our chest to chest naps.

OCD zaps away joy and it is a battle but hoping I'm starting to be on the other side. I do have my blips though - today being one! x

@AOMum14

Oh it does OP, I know. It's awful. My teen DD suffers too and is now medicated which has made SUCH a positive difference to her life and ability to do things.

My OCD peaked in the first year post partum too, but with second child it wasn't as bad...and I recognised the signs quicker too.

I generally have mine under control but it is always there ready to bubble over if something tips me over the edge!

I wish you well and enjoy your lovely bundle
