Medised - what is going on?

I went to buy Medised the other day at Tesco's pharmacy and was told that it is no longer available for children under two.

I went to Boots and told them he was two! (He is 19 months.)They gave me the same line about how it can't be sold to a child under two.

I also use it on my 5 month old whenever she is coughing in the night and can't settle.

The Tesco's woman told me it's because people are using it alongside Calpol and not realising they are both paracetamol. I've never done this and don't plan to start now so surely I'm not doing anything wrong?

Has anybody else found this recently and do you think you will stop using Medised for your under-twos?

The sooner the state takes all babies and children into full-time care, the better.

We just can't be trusted, can we?

mrsgboring · 10/10/2008 09:27

Opinions on what is safe change all the time. My mother used to treat her own asthma with OTC aminophylline which is a damn dangerous drug in overdose (nasty to take anyway) and now only on prescription.

I'm sure many 1970s parents were up in arms about the removal of OTC sedatives for the routine doping of children at night.

As a child of an educated, cautious, responsible mother who nevertheless used to disregard labels and/or guess the dose of travel sickness medicine and leave me feeling utterly whacked out, I do welcome this.

mrsgboring, Why be so bitter about ''the state''? are they really so terrible for trying to ensure that babies are safe? How awful of them. Obviously there are problems with medised otherwise they wouldn't have changed it. The state makes sure you use car seats too,how very dare they.

Newmammy · 10/10/2008 11:09

Sorry mrsboring, that was aimed at bridie3, i misread, accidents happen ay?

mrsgboring · 10/10/2008 11:44

No worries Newmammy - 'tis better than a quadruple dose of Dramamine. Believe me.

Bridie3 · 10/10/2008 17:24

Newmammy! I shouldn't have to insert a wink smiley.

Newmammy · 10/10/2008 18:17

Ahh, i can never get written sarcasm. It just isn't the same written down as it is said out loud. I apologise.

Wow...
This has been a long time coming because our DS2 is 6 1/2 and when he was a baby a chemist made a massive and humiliating production about my request for Medised.

In my case it was the pediatrician who admitted dd2 to hospital for peri-orbital cellulitis who recommended that we give him Medised to clear the sinus congestion that lead to this secondary infection. I eventually brought in a note to that effect because I was very annoyed at the accusation that I wanted to drug my son in order to get a few more hours peace.

For whatever reason, it did not make our DS2 tired or even sleepy and it does not have that effect on DD2 either.

i just bought some medised for my 1 year old as she has a really bad cold and it worked its really good stuff but its not fair on us people who have a sick child and also has a "brain" and knows what they are doing with the medicine.
We have to go without because of other peoples silly mistake.

Also some babies/toddlers medicine was withdrawn again yesterday 1/3/09 hope its not medised.

Stumbled upon this old thread when Googling to find the list of banned kids medicines.

All medicines are dangerous if used improperly. Full stop.

wannaBe "I have actually read threads on here from people who have used medised to make their children sleep when they, the parents, have been sleep deprived." NO WAY?? Surely not?? Fancy that... How disgusting!

I have, and will continue to use the appropriate medicine when needed, and that includes Medised, which I wouldn't be without. In the first 2 winters of my DD's life we would have been lost without it as sometimes I think it was the only thing that allowed DH and I to ever have any sleep at all. I'm not ashamed to admit it either.

I don't know the stats, but I wouldn't be surprised if more children have died as a result of their parents being sleep deprived (car crashes, wrongly administering medicine in a haze of sleep deprived confusion, physical abuse when they're at the end of their tether etc) than by administering Medised. Just a thought...

It's men. Of course, when they sit in committees they naturally assume that we women are too thick to work out how sensibly to deal with our childrens' minor ailments, so what they do is they WITHDRAW anything that works ie anything with drugs in it rather than placebos!

I was refused Medised recently and told it's being withdrawn. my reply was that I'll just do what I do with all the other withdrawn products: buy it from the USA!

piratecat · 20/03/2012 19:43

so peed off i was when i realised that it had a sedative in it, and i had never heard of it.

my dd never slept through because of night asthma for 3 yrs, it may have helped.

Seona1973 · 20/03/2012 20:06

it contains an anti-histamine, not a sedative. It was changed to age 6 due to side effects such as sleep disturbances, hallucinations, etc not because of potential overdosing, etc
