Radiology department sent me letter to contact GP about results of Xray?

I had recently a chest Xray ( two weeks ago requested by GP.
The GP rang me last week with the results.
I also spoke about the result with another GP yesterday and also with asthma nurse yesterday.
Anyway today I received a letter from the Radiology department asking me make GP appointment to discuss the result.
Im surprised that and why they do that?
The results was abnormal ( consolidation in my right lung) but apparently nothing serious but this letter just sent me right into a panic mode!
do hospitals now send letters like this?
Do they worry that I would not get hold of the results and it’s is super serious?
I can also see the results on my NHH app.
I tried to call to the radiology dept to ask but impossible to get through.

I think it's quite common for anything that is not a normal result to get an automatic line in the letter telling you to talk to your GP, but ultimately only your GP or consultant can advise.

EBearhug · 18/02/2025 12:25

If you've already spoken to your GP about it, I'd assume it's just paperwork catching up with reality, but I'd probably call my GP to double check.

Springhopess · 18/02/2025 12:31

Well the letter was typed according to the date in the letter as 11th of Feb a day before the GP phoned me..
It just I never received a letter like this and I had abnormal results before, usually it’s the opposite I have to chase the letters…
This later says:

The result was forwarded to DR Smith at New old clinic, please contact you surgery as you may need to make an appointment to discuss your results.

I wouldn’t worry as your GP is clearly on it. You’re ahead of the letter!

The GP rang me a week ago, I already used up the medicine they gave me!
the letter only came today.. but was dated a day before GP called.
Its just weird as normally I don’t get any letters like this..definitely not from Radiology department before.

The letter is to make sure you've actually got the results and the problem being dealt with if needed. A safety net in case a) you fail to contact the GP to get your results AND b) the GP hasn't received them or has missed contacting you about them.

anxietythroughtheroof · 18/02/2025 12:43

Possibly they don't send a letter unless there's something abnormal.
Everyone should be safety netted. It's a good thing that it's been sent

The GP did not seem overly concerned at all however on my nhs app the results is very much highlighted with capitals saying HIGH ABNORMALITY ALERT .
im just very worried by the way they written it, plus the letter. Upon taking the scan the radiologist asked if I will got GP ?
It seems like they must seen something more than GP says?

Ring your GP, ask if he has seen the results of your scan and what are your next steps. (I'm not sure from your posts if the GP reviewed your scan results before ringing you, or rang you because of your meds)

I spoke with two different gp about the results, I was given antibiotics and steroids, they definitely seen it, also spoke to asthma nurse yesterday to discuss my problems, she had the results in the front of her.

It’s just it all
seemed very serious to me, that’s all.

I work processing these kind of results in a GP surgery. Anything abnormal is ALWAYS flagged as urgent. And the radiology department will continue to email us every day until we respond to say we have received them. I honestly think your GP has read the report and made an informed decision on the treatment/review needed. However if you're really worrying then absolutely make another appointment/do an econsult and just ask what you've asked here 'radiotherapy letter makes this sound really serious, can I just check that our plan of action is definitely correct' - no GP will mind this.

Bloom15 · 18/02/2025 18:02

If you have the NHS app you can actually view your test results - it was how I found out I had fibroids and non-anemic iron deficiency after I got a text stating Gp would call me the week after.

Yeah, I can see the results on my nhs app.
I just wonder about the letter. As I never received letter form radiology after Xray.
