Awful blepharitis

I've been suffering from this since the summer..was misdiagnosed twice.
For the last two months I've been doing eye drops multiple times a day, two lots of heat pad and massage/cleaning a day am and pm and it won't go.
I wake up with swollen eyelids and I'm so self conscious. Have had a few styes.
I've got a hospital appointment but not until April. Opticians and GP just pass me back and forth and don't do anything.
Baby shampoo didn't work.
Will it be like this forever as I'm so down, even sleeping on my side seems to hurt my eyes

I found the blephasteam was the only thing that helped , along with thealoz duo eye drops for the dry eye.

The blephasteam is expensive but , for me, is worth every penny with the extreme discomfort I got . It does look strange, though.

Have you used any new skincare in that time? I had what I thought was blepharitis for a few months but I realised it timed in with using tretinoin and so I started being scrupulous about washing my hands and under my nails multiple times after using it until there was no trace left, and also creating a barrier round my eyes with a gentle moisturiser and of course keeping the tretinoin product well away from the eye area. It did clear up and I think it was possibly bleeding into my eye creases while I was sleeping (even though I wasn't applying it particularly near my eyes), or I was rubbing my eye area with my hands when half asleep and still had traces of the product on them - or maybe it was unrelated and just cleared up roughly the same time out of coincidence, but I thought it was worth a mention!

Have you tried using Optase wipes? I found they helped the blepheritis. I don’t wear any eye makeup or use any cosmetic products on or near my eyelids. My dry eyes are treated with cyclosporine drops prescribed by the hospital eye clinic.

I feel for you @jabbat it's horrible.

I've had it twice and the only way to get rid of it (for me) was to take a tub of warm water into the shower and drop a little Johnston's baby shampoo in it (mix it into water).

Then I use ten cotton wool balls dipped in the tub of shampoo/water mix (one at a time).

I gently hold one cotton wool ball against my closed eye for five seconds and wipe once in the direction away from my eye. I do this five times for each eye only wiping once and discarding.

Then, after thoroughly washing my hands, I gently rinse closed eyes with water. I don't towl dry either - just use a fresh cotton wool ball for each eye and gently pat dry. I do this twice a day for about four to five days. Never touch your eyes with fingers if you can help it.

Only thing that works for me.

My message above was in response to the now-deleted spam posts! I did quote them but it somehow failed.

I wrote those deleted posts and I'm no spammer. I have the receipts and empty bottles to prove I bought the stuff I recommended. I had dreadful blepharitis and despite using drops, heat masks etc nothing worked. Every time I cried it got even worse. I spent a fortune on washes, drops and sprays and at 46, as I was then, I looked 86 around my eyes. I accidentally stumbled across this company but thought I had nothing to lose as had tried everything the optician recommended. I bought the trial kit so spent about a fiver. Within days my eyes had massively improved and I could wear make up again. I contacted the owner and explained my situation and also told him what I'd been using previously. He replied and made suggestions but didn't do any heavy sales. I have now been able to stop using the cream I recommended as I no longer suffer with blepharitis.

I am a compulsive buyer and spend money like water which means I've tried many things, and was merely giving my recommendation on a product(s) I know works. I've emailed MNHQ as my account was deactivated and explained I'm no spammer and they have reinstated my account. I was purely being honest and trying to be helpful.

Well, can you tell us what you recommend @Childrenare4life ?

I am recently diagnosed with this. Have used Blephasol and hot flannels etc. also anti histamine to stop itching. Have been recommended Sea Buckthorn oil so am trying that. You can get it in capsules or gummies. Can’t say if it’s working yet as only just started it. Also be scrupulous with clean pillow cases regularly and try not to rub eyes. I look terrible too. Very frustrating. Good luck OP.

My blepharitis was one early symptom of rheumatoid arthritis. I also had uveitis.
So a proper eye exam by an ophthamologist is really important.
I had steroid drops, then artificial tears for maintenance.
I am extremely allergic to all eye ointments because they contain paraffin related products. It took me ages to convince eye doctors not to prescribe them for me.
Also, have you tried taking an antihistamine just to see if it helps?

GingerGirl4549 · 20/02/2025 05:39

I've had blepharitis for 5 years. I feel you, flare ups are awful. At the start I was really bad ongoing for 6 months and goldeneye helped settle that. I've stopped wearing contacts except occasionally and no eye makeup more than once/twice a week. But the thing that's really worked is blephosol. Comes in Wipes or liquid which i apply with a cotton pad. I swear by it. I haven't had a flare up for over 18 months. Get it from amazon but opticians/ boots etc sell it too

I use a cleaning method recommended by my opticians. A bit of bicarbonate of soda stirred into a bit of boiling water. Let it cool slightly. Then use that to clean the lash/ waterline area.

The other things that help me are

  • heated eye bag
  • clinitas soothe eye drops
  • sea buckthorn supplements
maslinpan · 20/02/2025 10:13

My blepharitis has radically improved after I was prescribed Latanoprost drops. These were prescribed as a protection from Glaucoma but the eye redness and soreness is noticeably better.
