Raised calcium in blood test, positive experiences?

Hi, so I’ve been getting a lot of muscle spasms and more tired than usual lately. I paid to have a private blood test online with Forth. It came back with low RBC, vitamin D of 49 and the one that’s worried is calcium at 2.73 which they say is raised, I’m booked to speak with my GP but looking for positive experiences? I stupidly had a Quick Look on Google and then stopped as it scared the s* out of me. Feeling quite anxious and would love to hear some positive experiences. I’m 42yo mum of 2 girls.

Btw. The clinician review said my results indicated mild anaemia which I’m guessing could be contributing to the tiredness etc.

My son has high calcium and has been given vitamin d drops as apparently low vitamin d can cause high calcium. I also googled and scared myself...... BUT he was given 3 months worth of vitamin d and has to go back for another blood test in 3 months..... so keep telling myself it can't be anything too sinister as the GP doesn't seem concerned and to me 3 months seems like a long time health wise for a child

Not to worry you but ask the GP about hyperparathyroidism. High calcium along with high parathyroid hormone & low Vitamin D can cause this & bone/muscle/joint aches along with tiredness can be a sign.
I'm just in the early stages of being diagnosed & having more tests. Hopefully you can just get it ruled out.

@HibbidyHabbidyHoo I’m sorry to hear your son has high calcium. Did his vitamin D come back low too? It’s good they aren’t overly concerned.

@twitchwitch thank you, I was actually just reading up on that. I can’t sleep so slipped back into dr Google 🤦🏼‍♀️ How did you find out you had it out of interest? Are they going to operate do you think?

Mine came to light as I was having persistent joint pain but also chronic itching all over the body. The GP basically tested everything & this came up. I had an appointment with endocrinology a couple of weeks ago & I've to have some more bloods, some 24 hour urine tests & scans but he did say it would likely need be surgery, which as far as I can tell is pretty effective.

@twitchwitch thanks, it sounds like you’ve got a great GP. How high was your calcium out of interest? I’m expecting this is what I have and feel like maybe I’ve had this for quite a while. I don’t even know why I added calcium to the testing package, it was just cheap and I was feeling rubbish. Glad I did now so hopefully I can follow your path and get sorted. The surgery does sound quite straight forward and effective you’re right there.

@Ellie54320
My calcium was 2.8 (2.89 adjusted) & I think from memory the range is 2.1-2.6. They need to test the calcium, parathyroid hormone & Vitamin D all from the same blood draw, not over separate tests.
There's quite a lot to take in & as you've said, google can be a nightmare. I'm just trying to take it step by step & not overthink things. I've just had a hysterectomy so needed to get that over & done with so I can get my head round dealing with this now.

I had hyperPARAthyroidism which is the most common cause of raised calcium. Mine was 2.86 at its highest.

your GP needs to repeat the blood draw with PTH and calcium, and ideally vitamin d but the lab will likely refuse it as it’s been tested within 3 months. Low vitamin d is normal with hyperpara. Its borderline anyway, mine was 49 at diagnosis.

highly recommend the group hyperpara action 4change on fb for loads of information. You will need surgery to remove the rogue gland.

it may of course be raised for other reasons but ill put good money on you having hyperpara.

Hi, @Ellie54320
I was wondering how you got on, re tests?
In recent blood tests - my first since 2019 - my calcium level was 2.72, vit D was 49 and I came out as slightly anaemic, so very similar to you.
Also fatigue and lower back pain.
I'm waiting for a parathyroid and repeat bone serum blood test next week.
