8 week immunisations - generally considered safe?

DD is due her first lot of immunisations next week and whilst I have decided to give her single vaccines for the MMR later on I haven't looked into other vaccines so much. Are the 8 week ones generally considered safe? Apart from the side effects are there any "anecdotal risks"?

Had a look through the archives but can't find much about it.

Hi Missingmyheels, DS1 had the 8, 12 and 16 week vaccinations no problem, However DS2 reacted really badly to his 12 week immunisations - very high temp, badly constipated and gastro irritation that took around 3 weeks to settle down . He has still not had his 16 week imms and is 22 weeks now as I am anxious about the side effects. Our Chiroprator who treated him after the immunisations said he may have reacted if there was egg in the vaccine but I am still waiting for an ingredients list from the GP and they seem very reluctant to give it out, she also said that apparently boys tend to react worse than girls so your DD might be ok

DS1 is now 2.5 and still needs to have his MMR as I was non rubella immune when pregnant with DS2, he will defintely be having single jabs for this as will DS2

PS - GPs and Health Visitors want you to get your children immunised so play down side effects, it was only after DS2 reacted badly that I found out his reaction was on the normal scale?!? Apparently is is very common for it to upset the lining of the gut therefore causeing gastro irritation and bringing on colicky symptoms.

Certainly preferable than getting the illnesses they protect against. There are people all over the world who would give their lives for the chance to get their kids vaccinated as well as ours are.

MerlinsBeard · 09/05/2008 14:18

the vaccines that they have now are better than the ones ds1 had 5 years ago. not in that they offer more protection but that they have refined the strains that they need to innoculate against.

ds3 had his on tuesday and apart from him being a bit more grizzly, he is fine. Unlike firststeps though i was told possible side effects before the jabs and asked twice to sign my consent for him to hav ethem

Safer than the risks of meningitis, sepsis, tetanus, diptheria, polio and whooping cough all of which are deadly and really not to be compared with three weeks of colic imo.

MissingMyHeels · 09/05/2008 14:21

Thanks for your responses, sorry to hear about your DS2 first steps, I had read something about egg allergy. Little concerning about the gastro stuff as I have no end of gastro problems.

Just want to be prepared for all potential outcomes [control freak]

btw, she is definitely having them, no question about that! Just wondering on the general consensus of side effects and safety as they don't seem to mention much about it online.

MMH, we see a DR before any jabs, if that's the case where you are, talk thru any concerns you have with him/her

firststeps · 09/05/2008 15:14

LaDiDaDi if you had lived through my DS2's "3 weeks of colic" as you put it; you would probably not dismiss it so lightly
