Hi everyone
for background- mid fifties, menopausal, overweight. Have been having some health issues that have slowly got worse over the last 6 months, lots of aching, hard to stand up for any length of time because of lower back pain, shoulder tendinopathy, plantar facitis, hip pain, when I walk I get the most pain in both calves, lower back and pelvic area. Keep getting these massive sore/cysts on my boobs or under my arms. Developed severe dry eye and if I don’t use drops all the time get double vision. Trying to lose weight and nothing working, exercise becoming impossible because of the pains and constantly hungry!

went to the docs and they did some bloods the results are

ESR 18
serum c reactive 11
RF - normal
total white cell 5.16
red blood cells 4.1
MCV 97
MCH 33.6
Neutrophil 2.99
Lymphocyte 1.55
monocyte 0.41

some of them say they are out of normal range but put together is there anything you think I could ask the GP to look at in more detail? I don’t want a diagnosis just some help and guidance as I can’t carry on like this - I used to be a really active person that never stopped and walked everywhere, now just emptying the dishwasher is becoming impossible.

Your bloods are showing some signs of inflammation but it’s non specific. Best thing is to speak to the GP about your symptoms and see what they think.

Same as PP said but red blood cell count combined with slightly elevated MCV could mean a folate deficiency or B12 deficiency. Do you drink alcohol?

Also have you had your thyroid checked? Hypothyroidism and some liver conditions can cause mild inflammation and elevated MCV.

Rarely - I did have a blood test about 12 months ago that showed my B12 levels at 146 but when they retested they were 172 so ok

Last July my Serum TSH was 1.15 & my liver scan showed a fatty liver

Fatty liver could be the cause for the elevation but don't rule out a 'simple' vitamin deficiency. With perimenopause on top something very simple can make you feel absolutely horrendous.

While waiting for the doctor add in a B12, magnesium and Vitamin D3 supplement (separate supplements). They take a few weeks before you feel any different but if you're even slightly deficient (the NHS levels for deficiency are actually very low so you could probably use a top up anyway) it can make you feel horrendous.

I already take those supplements daily and have done for at least 18 months along with a 50+ women’s multivitamin. I’m currently living on the strongest cocodamols and ibuprofen 4 times a day
