Help, anyone had scaphoid (wrist) surgery

I broke my wrist last July and after being in a cast for 8 weeks, it hasn't healed.
I have had a cat scan and MRI and confirmed today that the fracture is still the same.
Will be decided by consultant at end of March to go ahead with surgery or not.
Just wanted to hear of any experiences after surgery please.

Not exactly the same but I had surgery after fracturing my radius. I was given the choice of having surgery or not after a closed reduction failed, and I decided to have the surgery after consulting with a few medic friends. I feel it was definitely the right decision as it would always have been weak otherwise. Recovery was faster than I expected and it feels completely normal now.

Thanks for your reply.
I'm slightly worried as they told me today that surgery could make it worse.
Also, if I don't then I will probably get arthritis in a few years and would then need surgery.
Just a little frustrated as it's already been over 7 months.

Scaphoids are apparently terrible for healing as they only get their blood supply from one end so if broken the other end doesn't get any blood.
Mine has a screw in it, but was part of a reconstruction after a complicated set of wrist (and other) fractures so I couldn't speak to the actual stand alone surgery, but it isn't a big screw and has been in there 14 years now without problems

Thanks very much, love your user name.
Meat pie anyone?
Just wanted some reassurance that it would be worth having it done.

My husband had it done - he broke the scaphoid bone playing football and didn’t realise for about 6 months. It was only when he couldn’t do a push-up months later that he had an x-ray done and realised. His doctor told him that if he didn’t have it done, he could go on to develop arthritis. He has been fine since the surgery. Good luck.

Thanks very much.
I have 6 weeks to make a decision but think I will go ahead now rather than wait to be 5 years older.

I know this is an old thread, but @Wickedstitch, how did you get on? My son is in the same position. Did you have a bone graft?
