Frozen shoulder

Any one experienced Frozen Shoulder? I started getting pain and stiffness about 7 weeks ago and it's got worse and worse since then. I saw a private physio last week who diagnosed Frozen Shoulder. She gave me some gentle exercises to do and advised me to ask my GP for a steroid injection. I have a GP appointment next week but I'm not sure whether they will do the injection then.

Ouch! Feeling your pain!

I've got one shoulder, defrosting and the other just starting to freeze.

Only thing that really helped me were painkillers.

I did have a laser guided steroid injection. Had to go private for it.

It didn't work for me but that doesn't mean it won't work for you.

The might do it at the Surgery for you. It's not painful (surprisingly) just feels a little strange.

I had one for a couple of years. At times it was excruciating. I saw phsyios but the exercises didn't help.

Bizarrely it just went away eventually.

BashfulClam · 09/02/2025 19:04

I had one, it was excruciating. I saw a physio who gave me exercises to do, it did heal on its own. Several people recommended acupuncture, if it comes back I’ll try it.

Dh had xray guided injection at the hospital. You may need referral for mri first and to give physio longer.

Hyperion100 · 09/02/2025 19:06

If you can go private, hydrodialation will sort it.

Thanks I hadn't heard of this. It sounds like a better option than the steroid injection. It is done on the NHS but long waiting lists I'd imagine.

Sometimes hydrodilation is combined with steroid. I doubt you will get a quick referral though.

Ouch. My frozen shoulder gave me the worst pain ever. Sleeping at night was awful. I’m a year on and still have discomfort. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

MrsJamin · 09/02/2025 20:58

I had a bad frozen shoulder, exercises did nothing but went private and got a procedure called Manipulation under anaesthesia. They basically put you under and yank it around, then you're under heavy painkillers for a few weeks so you do loads of physio to keep it moving. It worked brilliantly especially as I did a lot of exercises in water and then swam which I believe was key to my rehab. I don't think the procedure is done on the NHS but I didn't even bother having injections first, just straight to manipulation because my range of motion was so poor. Also it works best when you've had frozen shoulder for a while.

Treeleaf11 · 09/02/2025 20:58

Yes sleeping is painful. Glad yours has improved a bit.

I had a really good sports therapy massage treatment and some cupping (sounds weird but it works).

Pallisers · 09/02/2025 21:02

I am still recovering from one - can do everything now but tie my bra behind my back and I'm almost there.

I went to an ortho and he gave me one of those steroid injections. He used an ultrasound to make sure he was giving it in the right place. I felt relief within 4-5 days - it helped a lot. Physio - maybe 6-8 sessions got me the rest of the way. My friend had one at the same time and has just been doing exercises from the internet and hers hasn't improved a lot.

Xanadu58 · 09/02/2025 21:03

Yes, had a frozen shoulder about 6 years ago. So painful . I ended up having the hydrodilatation which was excruciating but definitely helped . Much better now although has left me with reduced range of movement in that shoulder.

MrsJamin · 09/02/2025 21:10

I should add I have probably 95% of my range of motion back after the MUA. Three years on, I'm still getting back my strength though, it prevented me from doing so much with my arm for six months that it was really weak until I returned to strength training.

LostMySocks · 09/02/2025 21:22

I had a frozen shoulder. Went private through work medical insurance. Had an MRI followed by hydrodilation combined with steroid injection followed by physio. I'm back to normal. I did nearly faint during the injection which was a bit embarrassing.
Before oit was fixed I really struggled with pain.

angelcake20 · 10/02/2025 22:14

I had one that started about 6 months after a skiing fall. It lasted about 18 months. I didn't seek medical attention as it follows the expected path and eventually disappeared. It can take several years.

Irenesortof · 15/10/2025 22:06

I think I'm starting a frozen shoulder, my third in 10 years. But maybe I've remembered the symptoms wrong; can I check with more recent sufferers? My shoulder has been somewhat stiff, somewhat painful for a few months, pain coming and going, deep tissue massage with my usual professional not helping as it usually does. Today I bumped my hand against the back of a chair and got a shocking pain on the outside of arm which made me scream. That pain felt very familiar from previous frozen shoulders. Movement is limited but much better at some times than others. Any thoughts welcome please.

Treeleaf11 · 15/10/2025 22:39

Hi. Yes that sounds similar to mine. I had horrible electric shock type pain for about a month if I made the wrong movement.

OP posts:
MrsJamin · 17/10/2025 17:33

Yes it's the kind of shocking pain if you do a quick movement like if you catch a drink from falling over, and it takes away your breath. Apparently until that phase is over, treatments are unlikely to work.

Marylou62 · 17/10/2025 21:06

I had a frozen shoulder about 8 yrs ago..it was awful and sometimes excruciating..I was told it would eventually go of it's own accord after about 18 months..and it did! It just started getting better until one day I thought 'oh.. it's not as painful'. I was elated..
I then broke it, 5 ribs and my collar bone within weeks! Sigh..

Gizmosgremlins · 17/10/2025 21:13

I had a frozen shoulder and physio didn't help. Eventually went for an mri and then received the ultrasound guided steroid injection and the hydrodilation. The procedure was not pleasant, im not squeamish but this almost made me faint...weirdest sensation ever. But still well well worth doing. I didn't see immediate results but it did slowly start to unfreeze and now I have 95% movement back. I do fear my other shoulder is just now starting to freeze though 😩

gerispringer · 17/10/2025 21:16

I got the ultrasound and injection fairly quickly and it improved significantly after that. Much less pain and greater ROM.
