menorrhagia - any others with it ?

Hi all
I have a confirmed diagnosis of menorrhagia

Ultimately - i have a bunch of other conditions including ibs..

Also benign colon polyps ( that keep being removed and tested via colonoscopy)

( my body doesnt absorb iron from tablets or spa tone sachets
But does from food)

Ive had NHS iron iv before due to
menorrhagia..

I eat high iron cereal like wheatabix and foods with iron in - strawberries, blue berries , beef etc

I read on mumenet a while bk that someones dr told them to try 8 apricots a day for iron

I get it - 8 apricots a day = 11 point something of iron.
But they are high in sugar...

Does anyone have any suggestions ?!

Seems im heading towards another iron iv soon

Can they prescribe tranexamic acid to (hopefully) reduce the bleeding?

eekwhatnow · 08/02/2025 16:08

I'm not sure I've got any suggestions food wise you wouldn't get from googling a list of iron rich foods. That's very frustrating that supplements won't work.
I have been given tranexamic acid to manage mine when it's got out of control in the past, and progesterone when I've caught it quickly, but I'm guessing your doctor has thought of those already or they don't suit you?

Tranexamic acid, but I just take the pill without the hormone withdrawal bleed now. Have done for years.

Are you celiac? It can cause anemia

OldChairMan · 08/02/2025 19:53

The beef is obviously useful. Fortified cereals are hindered by the cereal itself (and dairy) reducing absorption of iron, the amounts in strawberries etc is tiny.

Have you tried sublingual iron supplements, so bypassing gut absorption?

Presume you have had an ultrasound to check for polyps or anything causing the bleeding? Asking as I had very heavy periods and nobody in the medical profession suggestion looking into why and dealing with the cause (a polyp) for years.
