Gallbladder polyp

I've had a polyp on my gallbladder for over 20 years. Over time I've had scans etc on it due to symptoms usually mild
Discomfort under my right rib.

The last few years I have been getting really bad wind, discomfort and bloating. My GP referred me for another ultrasound and suggested removal maybe the answer. The ultrasound showed that it hadn't grown and still measured the same as the previous ultrasound 5mm.

I've finally received an outpatient appointment today for a few weeks time to see a consultant. I'm wondering now whether they will want to remove it or will it be wiser to leave it?

I'm utterly petrified at the thought of having surgery. I'm not in agony by any means. I just feel very bloated after eating and get this ache under my rib. It tends to flare up for a week or two then settle for a while.

Last week I had a flare up and could only put it down to eating seeded bread, granola and curry. For days I had the most horrific wind and bloating and of course the dull ache under my ribs.

Does anyone know if they do operate if you have a polyp or if it's just gallstones?

I'm in the same position OP although my polyp is smaller. Although I haven't been scanned in a couple of yrs so it may have grown?- unfortunately I don't know the answer but hopefully somebody will be able to advise! Mine also flares up and then dies down (I'm in a flare at the moment and it's really quite uncomfortable)

I'm in a flare up also right now. My appointment is in about 3 weeks. So until then I'm going to keep a diary.

I've just eaten some meat pie and mash and I've immediately started with wind. It's not quiet either. It's so embarrassing my DH thinks it is hilarious but I'm mortified when it starts.

I have a 2mm polyp found a few years ago by chance (was having abdominal ultrasound).

Recently I've had bloating, gas and diarrhoea, with one episode lasting a full week.

A bit of googling led me to gallbladder stuff, and it reminded me I ought to get mine checked in case it's grown.

Using google a few weeks ago I got the impression the gallbladder wasn't removed for polyps unless they became cancerous. I may be wrong though.

I thought the same unless they reached 10mm then they operate. My GP seems to think they will remove my gallbladder though. I won't have any answers until my appointment in 2 weeks so I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm in the middle of a flare up now and more than likely by the time it's my appointment it will have calmed down. I'm keeping a diary though so I can remember correctly when I go.

I am utterly terrified of having it removed.

Try not to worry about having it removed, you may not need to. Easier said than done, I know, but as someone who has recently become very anxious worrying about a different operation I've had to clamp down on my anxious thoughts and make a conscious decision not to worry as it doesn't help!

I'm trying not to worry too much. The letter to the consultant from the sonographer says polyp remains the same size and I'm being referred for consideration of having it removed and because I have symptoms.

I'll know in a few weeks when ihave an appointment so I'm going to try to put it to the back of my mind until then. It's easier said than done though as I already have anxiety and anything medical sends my mind spiralling.

OP I am so similar, I have a lot of medical anxiety, and have had anxiety at other points in my life about other things too.

It took a lot to get me into an MRI recently!

I'm due to have my hip replaced and I'm frightened. So much so that I'm considering cancelling the operation! But I'm trying my hardest to work on my mind and anxiety.

I found the following helpful recently:

Maybe it's not what you need as maybe you don't catastrophise, but thought I'd share just in case.

I've been thinking and last year when I went for another ultrasound it was also found that I have mild fatty liver.

I also tested positive for H pylori a couple of years ago and that was thought to be the causes of the gastrointestinal problems I'd been having.

I've had a flare up today after having a mainly plant based diet for most of the week. About 45 mins or so after eating Turkish eggs with sourdough and a hash brown I developed horrific wind and fullness. Slight stabbing on and off under right rib that then triggered a slight panic attack. I also felt like I needed a bowel movement.

Hi @wordleinthemorning did you your polyp removed? Was everything ok?

wordleinthemorning · 26/01/2026 11:54

No I didn't have it removed the consultant said there was no need!
