Pneumonia and chest x ray

ohpoowhatnow · 05/02/2025 18:42

Does anyone have any experience of having pneumonia that was resistant to amoxicillin? I've had a follow up chest x ray due to not feeling well and apparently it's worse than it was. Not sure how they will treat me and worried. This is been going on for over 6 weeks and 4 courses of AB. They've told me to head to hospital and pack a bag.

Have they tried you on azithromycin?

AppleKatie · 05/02/2025 18:51

I took doxycycline in that position last year.

DoNoTakeNo · 05/02/2025 19:19

@ohpoowhatnow Sorry you're poorly, these respiratory infections are so debilitating aren't they?

My symptoms are sore throat, dry cough, low grade fever, swollen glands & breathlessness, and a nice bit of fatigue too! Do you have the breathlessness?

No experience quite yet, but I'm a little bit both behind & ahead of you in the process.

I've had amoxicillin and doxycycline courses over the last fortnight and am just beginning erythromycin. GP has arranged a chest X-ray for tomorrow & sputum sample (if I ever produce any!)
GP is a bit puzzled tbh, but the symptoms are real and she told me that I am not allowed to just ignore them & hope it goes away!

Good luck with yours

@ohpoowhatnow I'm sorry - I didn't register that you have pneumonia. I really hope that you get better v v soon & back to your normal life Flowers

Frankiedear · 05/02/2025 19:31

When I had pneumonia, I was on 2 different antibiotics, so if you've only had amoxicillan, I'm sure there will be other options

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2025 19:52

DH once had pneumonia and had 5 different types of antibiotics before one worked. The last one had all over it that it was one only to be taken after everything else had failed which was a bit worrying - but it sorted it nicely

CharlotteFlax · 05/02/2025 20:45

Amoxicillin has never been any good for my chest infections. Doxycycline is where it's at!

Really hope you feel better very soon!

Caswallonthefox · 05/02/2025 20:54

I had a pink horse pill when they discovered amoxicillin wasn't touching it. Probably doxicillin.

Yourinmyspot · 05/02/2025 21:04

I had Clarithromycin after Amoxicillin didn’t clear my chest infection last year. They gave me a five day course of prednisolone too. The second lot antibiotics cleared it.

dumpydumpydumpdump · 05/02/2025 21:07

They will want to start a different antibiotic and maybe see if they can get a sample to help work out what bug it is. Are you bringing up much sputum? They can test that.

WombatCowgirl · 05/02/2025 21:10

Co amoxiclav, IV and then pills, 3 courses. 2 weeks in hospital, six months recovering lung function:(

ThatDaringTurtle · 05/02/2025 23:16

I recently was in hospital for 3 nights with pneumonia. I've been ill since 4th Jan. If they have told you to go to hospital you need to go. I had different IV antibiotics to fight the infection I had. They did blood culture tests to fingld out the bacteria that was causing the infection. I was so ill had a high temp and fever.

Soonenough · 05/02/2025 23:37

I had 4 different antibiotics. Two when first out of A&E and then when not recovered in two weeks , two different ones plus steroids and inhaler . It really took almost 3 months recovery all together.

baroqueandblue · 06/02/2025 06:58

Hi OP, how are you feeling this morning, did you go to hospital as they advised?

ohpoowhatnow · 06/02/2025 09:21

Hi everyone thanks for your replies. Sounds like there's some really nasty bugs going round. I'm here now , came this morning with my bag packed. Will see what they say

Best of luck. Keep us posted if/when you feel up to it @ohpoowhatnow

You're in the best place for them to get to the bottom of things 💐

ThatDaringTurtle · 06/02/2025 10:03

Let us know how you get on. Sending hugs xx

RachCBas84 · 06/02/2025 12:00

Yes, the Amoxicillin that I was prescribed did nothing to shift it. The doctor said it was likely to be an a-typical pneumonia and I was prescribed Clarithomycin instead and started to feel better within a couple of days.
I hope you feel better soon, it's a horrible illness.

Pleasealexa · 06/02/2025 12:10

Likely to require IV antibiotics and blood tests to check CRP levels. You are in the best place and good that they arranged a chest x-ray.

How are you? Are you still in hospital? X

ohpoowhatnow · 10/02/2025 10:16

@ThatDaringTurtle hi thanks for checking in, I'm not, I was in for two days having tests after we found out the pneumonia had doubled in size. So after an ultrasound by a very helpful respiratory specialty I was sent home on 7 weeks of AB double dose .... if that doesn't clear it I don't know what will 😂 actually starting to feel better too which is a nice feeling after 2 months.

I'm getting there. It's so frustrating not being able to rush around like I did without getting breathless. Pleased you are feeling better. Pneumonia is horrible x

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/02/2025 11:02

You’ll need IV antibiotics at the hospital. My husband had double pneumonia recently and that was the only thing that worked.

Do get a vaccination as soon as you can. Once you’ve had pneumonia, it often recurs.

Hope you’re well soon.
