Hi there everyone,

I had a nhs dentist appointment on Tuesday and got referred to have an xray the next day (today) so my dentist can see if my wisdom teeth can be extracted safely without hitting nerves sinus etc. Anyway I don’t know how this happened but I managed to get an appointment to discuss the xray with my dentist this Friday ! Being with the nhs I thought this would be weeks away.

anyway sorry for rambling basically she said she was going to discuss with me the pros and cons of taking out wisdom teeth in relation to the xray. I was just wondering do you think it would be reasonable if I’m not sure what to do at the end of the appointment asking for a bit of time to think over having them extracted? I don’t want to come across as annoying to the dentist. Ideally I’d like to talk to my partner about it as he always gives great advice and I don’t want to just jump into saying yes straight away .

or should I just book into have them removed and then cancel if I want to ?

also has anyone had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted? If so how did it go ? Did you have any complications and did you get local anaesthetic or sedation ? Thanks so much !

It's absolutely fine to ask for some time to think about it if you aren't sure. Is the dentist planning on doing it themselves or referring you?

Are you having problems? What's the reason for getting them removed?

I’m not sure actually they have a specialist in oral surgery at the practice so I’m assuming I may go with her. But it could be general anaesthetic which does scare me a little .

Basically all 4 wisdom teeth are half in half out and causing cheek cuts and they are hard to clean also my bottom wisdom tooth is so near to the back of my mouth that it hurts to open my mouth at times . thanks for getting back to me x

Of course you can think about it for a while - good luck.

They need to come out by the sound of it. Is your partner a dentist?

IHateMozzies · 05/02/2025 22:28

Had mine out in hospital, had one lot local and one lot general. The general was a lot better than the local!

Definitely think it over, but worth getting out if you get the chance. It was just pain and misery for me.

A general anesthetic will need to be done in hospital

Just because they are half in half out doesn't mean they need to come out. It's always going to be a decision as to how much they are bothering you/how much you can put up with food getting stuck. If you've had no definitive infections and no decay then they don't need to come out, and so it definitely is a personal choice. @

The reason I ask if its going to be done in practice is because if your going to need a referral there will obviously be quite a wait anyway so it's worth accepting a referral and then having a think, whilst if it's just done in the practice then I would advise having a think if your not sure and chatting to your partner

Hey thanks for getting back to me . My dentist looked at my xray today you were right ! the wisdom teeth are so close to the nerve almost touching them and the upper ones roots right into the sinus ! So she said that the cheek cutting will eventually stop and that I need to buy smaller toothbrushes to get in there ! She said it’s just not worth the risk of sinus perforation and nerve damage.

I had all 4 come through at the same time, all were impacted so all had to come out under GA in hospital. This was 30 years ago. The whole thing was absolutely fine. I think I spent 1 night in hospital but only because the op. was done late evening (as far as I remember).
