What could this twitching be?

I’ve had a twitch in my eyelids for about 5 weeks now, it’s mainly one sided but occasionally it’s both eyes. Sometimes it’s a regular twitch and other times it’s like a stiffness or slowness when I blink.

Then last night I had a twitch in my thigh which would not stop, I was trying to sleep and all of a sudden I had a huge twitch/jerk in my spine. Eventually I discovered that balling myself up stopped it and got a few hours uncomfortable sleep!

I have booked a GP appointment, but such is life it’s not until the end of the month. Although I may cancel it as I feel like a right dick taking up GPs time for a twitch! Despite what the NHS website says.

I will cut out caffeine (drink 3/4 cups a day) and alcohol (1bottle of wine over the weekend) to see if that helps. But something tells me it’s not that. I’m not overly stressed either.

My main worries are MS, as my sister has it, or something else neurological.

Wondering if anyone has had anything and what it ended up being?

I’m female 45, non smoker. Perimenopausal on HRT for 2 years. Migraines started 2021.

Have you considered magnesium glycinate capsules?

Of course you should keep your appointment! I have a tremor which started at 40. I had scans etc, nothing was foun, so I have learnt to live with it, but it's worth finding out for peace of mind.

I get twitches when I’m stressed

WattleTyler · 05/02/2025 08:13

You definitely need to get it checked for peace of mind.

I get periodic ‘benign fasciculations’ which can be really alarming.

The twitch in my thigh has started again! It’s so weird and a bit fascinating.
Bodies are odd.

Took me 3 years to be diagnosed with Hemifacial spasm, which started as a twitch in my left eye. Try to video the twitch before your appointment.

They are slowly realising that low iron can be one reason for restless legs syndrome so it's not out of the realms of possibility that it could affect other muscle groups. However stress and being seriously overtired makes mine twitch, ie a weeks worth of not leaving properly. Hot chocolate and twix bars makes DHs eyes twitch/tic.

How are your vitamin levels, or sleep/stress levels atm?

Sleep is ok, I have to wake up daily at 5:30am for work but get to sleep by 10:30 most nights. I work in a private school so lots of holidays.

Stress is up and down, but no more or less than it ever has been. Normal I would say!

It’s been years since I’ve had a blood test so no idea if I’m low on anything. I take a multi vitamin every day and eat a good diet of veg and protein.

Nothing has really changed in my life for years, which is part of the puzzle! I did up my HRT in December, maybe it’s related to that?

I was quite twitchy for a while a year or 2 ago and concerned enough to go to the GP about it. Your post has made me realise it's not happening now - for me the most noticeable one was finger twitch but it was in random other muscles as well. Since then I was diagnosed with low B12 and have had injections and been taking B12 supplements. I don't know for sure that's what has made the difference but it might be worth checking out.
