Has anyone travelled to Turkey for dental treatment? It was something I was always against but seeing so many positive reviews recently and the pricing of their procedures in some cases is a third the price of here...

I have seen patients who have done this and deeply regret it.

See previous posts, including the one I shared about a male nurse I know who had to deal with his own massive blood loss and had to return with no teeth.

Scary.

No dentists in this country will touch you again (quite rightly!) and so I suggest if you decide to do this you make sure you have both the funds and annual leave allowance to return to Turkey for all aftercare for the rest of your life, both planned and for any emergencies.

My husband did. He's had no problems, care was wonderful, he has an enhanced insurance to cover problems and flights back. The clinic he used were fantastic. And the results were brill

Saying that he had crowns to be clear, he did have one wisdom removed and a root canal, and again no problems. But just for clarity as you don't say what dental treatment you're looking for.

I mentioned this to my dentist she said "please don't" and proceeded to tell me it's all very lovely at first but after a while the problems start and you have to go back to Turkey it can't be put right here. Maybe the rules on that are just with the nhs though.
I suppose if you have all that money it's ok but after reading some of the horror stories I don't think it's worth the risk.

There are several problems here ,

it is not a good idea to travel long distances for dental or medical treatment, because however well it is done there can always be problems , the more complex the treatment the more likely there are to be problems

the type of dentistry provided for dental tourists will be very different to the type of dentistry provided in normal day to day practice. In my practicing life I have seen the same patients for decades and in not one person have I cumulativey placed 28 crowns , let alone placed 28 in one person in one treatment , especially in their 20s or 30s.

no dental treatment lasts forever, it all needs replacing and renewing. When someone has had such extensive treatment , each renewal needs more destruction of tooth , eventually resulting in loss of tooth.

if you need a lot of treatment , in order for it to last any length of time , your oral health , care, habits and diet need adjusting otherwise the treatment will fail quicker than your teeth. This requires a relationship with a practice that goes beyond the one off treatment , and preferably means your dental health is addressed and improved before treatment starts and monitored in the years after

it is common practice for clinics in certain countries (Turkey being the main one) to ask patients to sign NDAs (non disclosure agreements) . So it is very difficult to post a negative review . If you look at many of the social media groups you will see numerous postings about this and negative reviews being removed from review sites.

I have seen some great dentistry from abroad , done to people who lived in the country , had a relationship with the dentist and had their oral health looked after , not just a one off mega course of treatment.

Unfortunately I have seen some horrific problems from dental tourism , with people having spent all their money and not realising the NHS will not pick up the pieces and not being able to afford remedial treatment (months/years of treatment costing well into 5 figures ) or even the price of having all the implants and teeth removed privately from the few U.K. dentists willing to touch this type of bombshell treatment because of the litigious nature of U.K. dentistry . It is easy to Sue a U.K. dentist , not so a dentist abroad in a foreign jurisdiction.

People ask how can a U.K. dentist tell someone has had dental tourism , it’s easy because the treatment plans are so extensive and destructive , people are looking for an all in one visit so they have “no more problems” without realising they have now committed themselves to a lifetime of replacing and maintaining a really complex mouth , with the effect they will lose their teeth so much quicker .

@Lollygaggle has it as usual. Fab answer.

Last time I saw one of these patients the nicest thing I could think of to say was “gosh they are big and white aren’t they?”. I think he thought it was a compliment 😂
