Hiatal hernia surgery

After years of struggling with acid reflux I've reached the point where I can no longer deal with it.
The chest pains and breathlessness were put down to 'anxiety' so often that i gave up going to the doctors.
I recently tried again and really had to push for a referral.
An endoscopy in november revealed a 5cm sliding hiatal hernia, gastritis, Oesophagitis grade 2, Duodenitis and gord.
I thought I had suffered enough, I've now been asked to have a barium swallow test.
Surgery would be my absolute last option normally but I've reached the point where I see no other option.
Medication doesn't help, losing weight isn't an option because my BMI is already fine and I'm struggling to eat more than a few bites of food without being full.
Yet I'm now worried, after seeing other posts, that I'm going to need to fight for surgery? So many people are being refused surgery and I really don't know what I'll do if they turn me down.
To anyone who had the barium test, how long after this test were you told you would be able to have surgery? Or when were you refused surgery?
It would be on the nhs, going private isn't an option for me unfortunately.

What medication are you on?

Lanzoprazole at the moment. I also carry gaviscon dual action tablets with me everywhere I go (I even have some next to my bed)

I have a 5cm sliding hiatus hernia. GP swapped me onto omeprazole. I take liquid gaviscon advance after every meal and at bedtime.

Just getting over gastritis due to taking ibuprofen for my sciatica. Now on cocodamol.

The camera down showed scarring.

I am very careful with my diet. Tomatoes, onions, coffee, garlic, spicy foods, cream, dairy, cheese, fried foods being the main culprits. Wine can set it off

I've found lactose free milk, gluten free foods help too.

My gallbladder showed so much sludge they whipped that out which did help.

I know the operation you mean which doesn't always work. I read there's a newer procedure involving magnets believe it or not.

Pretty comprehensive list of food and drink to avoid. Gave avoid the peppermint one aniseed better. Also no fizzy drinks or chocolate

This diet should help while you're waiting.

Acid reflux is a common symptom of a hiatal hernia. Diet may help you manage this and other symptoms. Here's how.

I quit smoking 2 years ago hoping it would help. I had to give up chocolate a while back and I don't drink alcohol at all and can't handle fizzy drinks either. (I have a fizzing sensation in my throat often)
One of my biggest triggers is pastry, that produces serious projectile vomit. Gravy is another trigger, anything cooked in oil, garlic, onions and tomatoes.
My diet is very basic already and I drink mainly water.
I also had my gallbladder removed 8 years ago and I feel that it got worse after that.

I'd wait then for the barium meal. In the meantime research different types of surgery.
