Laryngitis at 31 weeks pregnant

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any golden remedies that might help me at this point as I’m really struggling.

on Saturday I got a very phlegmy cough and muscle aches. All I could take was paracetamol so I did but weirdly I’m getting these awful body sweats after i take it.

by Monday by coughing fits were so bad I obviously hurt my vocal box by constantly trying clear my throat.

I went to the doctors on Tuesday and explained I obviously have a bad case of the flu. Never had flu pregnant before so needed some meds that I could take. I explained everything but the doctor couldn’t even prescribe me a throat numbing spray so I was told to just stick to water.

i did just that. I also tried hot tea with lemon and honey or just warm milk with honey etc and some halls soothers honey/lemon. nothing was relieving my pain. I mean this is absolutely agonising each time I swallow.

I found a room temp drink soothes me the most whilst im drinking it. The second I’m done I feel this dryness that makes me cough. The cough I have now is very dry. And my nose won’t be unblocked no matter what i try.

at night I sleep maybe 1-2hrs tops. Because i have to breathe through my mouth as my nose is blocked and that dries my throat even more so the pain increases. I broke down crying at Tesco because the dryness made me think I couldn’t breathe. My partner calmed me down and I had to walk around with a bottle of water. Of course not talking because not a peep will come out even if I try.

I can feel my voicebox is swollen on my neck but you can’t see it. Has anyone experienced the severity of this? Can help me out as I’m very limited on stuff I can use to ease my pain.

any help would be appreciated.

what have your maternity triage line advised? They will be more used to weighing the the pros and cons of some of the usual drugs in the context of your pregnancy.

That sounds rough - I remember being very ill with last my pregnancy with flu.

It is even worse than normal because there is nothing that you can take apart from paracetamol. Even some herbs like Thyme and Sage (good for coughs) I wouldn’t recommend in pregnancy.

The only thing I can suggest is trying to sleep sitting up, this may help with the blocked nose and the breathing problem and cough. Honey helps to bring up phlegm but can make coughing worse in the evening, so I always avoid before bed.

In the end I had an awful rattle in the chest and I ended up on antibiotics that took 7 days to clear the infection. I was sick for two and a half weeks (the whole of my Christmas holidays)! So it can take a very long time to clear with being pregnant. Hopefully you get some sleep and rest and get better soon.

Thank you for this.

weirdly, my partner suggested having a bath. Maybe the moist air would soothe my throat. And it did. I could have slept there. After 10 mins I got out but suddenly couldn’t smell or taste anything. Took paracetamol as I had a headache too, now my pain is gone? But I can’t smell or taste anything. How bizarre. I was taking paracetamol for days and it didn’t do anything to my throat pain. so this is very confusing.

thank you for replying 😊

Ah I had this lol - I get it every year; not when pregnant thank god - but things that help me (that you can try too)

  • sleeping propped up; you could try on your side with your head elevated
  • trying to drink warm fluids a lot; constantly ..... lemon slices with sugar seemed to help
  • steam in the bathroom / Vicks room diffuser thing
-keeping your throat warm, not sure if it does help but mentally makes me think my throat isn't swelling haha

Mine only clears with antibiotics though; as it usually turns into a throat infection; I also don't speak ha
Loads of sleep & ring the maternity department and ask them if you can take anything else

Hi

I've this exactly for the last three weeks and just 2 days ago I have been given antibiotics because my tonsils are now swollen.

I still can't fully taste or smell anything but I'm hoping this goes away with these strong antibiotics.

You may need to back after it's been a week or two.

I hope you feel better soon
