Advice on which Dental Crown.

Hi everyone,

I had a root canal done on my back molar a few months ago, which has been fine. At the time, my dentist advised that I would need a crown to go over the tooth to protect it.

Luckily I am a NHS patient so he gave me 2 options- a NHS standard crown which will cost over £400 or another one (I can't remember the name but I think it began with P?), which will cost over £600. My dentist did explain both options well at the time, but I was in shock because of the prices and nothing went into my head.

I have an appointment this week to get measured for the crown but I have no idea which to go for and I don't want to be making a hasty decision when I am at the dentist on the day.

Does anyone have any knowledge of crowns and which would be best? Will a lot of my tooth have to be shaved down for both options? Which will last longer? The NHS one is tempting because of the price.

Thanks.

I think P might be porcelain. I’ve just had a back molar crowned. I had a gold crown as it’s stronger and my dentist agreed it was the better option

Was this the NHS one?

I've just been through similar, also on a molar which previously had root canal. I have an NHS dentist and my old, porcelain crown which was 10yrs old had crumbled and eventually fallen off.

I was given 3 options. (this was 3mths ago, so trying to recall the exact details)

  1. NHS crown which would be porcelain and I think £400-600. I can't recall the exact price. My old crown was porcelain and she said that it would not normally be used nowadays for molars- due to the eventual crumbling- which is exactly what mine did!

  2. Zirconia- £800. I reviewed a great deal on line and this seemed to be the best for molars

  3. I can't even recall the name of the 3rd option, but it was £900.

I'd ring the surgery and ask for the list and prices again, then you can review online and decide yourself which to have.
