Does anyone know of a sunscreen/cream which contains no parabens? I was checking out all the different brands for babies in Boots the other day, and not one was free of them. So does such a thing exist?

Try Foreverliving they dont put many chemiclas in there stuff but not sure what is in the sunscreen

bookthief · 06/05/2008 15:21

I use this by Green People on myself and ds and it smells lovely (lavender but you can also get unscented). No parabens.

PhDiva · 06/05/2008 19:04

thanks for the suggestions! That Green People website looks good, and we have already used the baby bath foam by the same brand, which we liked.

We use the green people unscented one, works fine I like it because it doesn't smell at all

NotABanana · 06/05/2008 19:08

Just what I am after!

ib · 06/05/2008 19:16

I use this

PhDiva · 06/05/2008 20:01

ib - what do you think of it? Worth buying? It's only factor 15, though.

I like it - it's a bit thick to apply but seems to work well. I read somewhere that factor 15 is the maximum that you can have, after that you are just adding chemicals without increasing the efficiency. Don't know if that's true, but all the mineral sunscreens (this is zinc oxide) I've come across say factor 15.

PhDiva · 08/05/2008 08:12

Hmmm interesting.... I'll have to check that out.

Green People one v nice IMO

Highlander · 08/05/2008 10:44

liked look of green people one but, I thought lavender (and tea tree oil) should be avoided by boys due to it mimicing oestrogens? (admitedly in high concs)

FrannyandZooey · 09/05/2008 17:20

ooh sorry bit late coming back to thread
our Green People cream does not have either of those things in

NotABanana · 09/05/2008 19:20

bump for me to remember to order suncream.

I think the one we used today is the reason for Ds2's cheek rash and itchy red ear.

cluckyagain · 09/05/2008 19:22

Again green people one great - both dds have excema and they say it's 'lovely mummy' as it goes on (as opposed to screams of 'it hurts mummy' with normal ones)

juuule · 09/05/2008 20:25

We get the Caribbean Blue Baby SunShield SPF15 from here

NotABanana · 09/05/2008 20:35

I have just ordered some suncream for the kids and a trial size one to keep at nanny's. I have also ordered some night cream for me.

singyswife · 09/05/2008 20:38

what r parabens? why should we be avoiding them? is this the same battle as trying to get deodorant without aluminium in it?

nixon1 · 10/05/2008 23:24

They're in almost all toiletries, except those which are organic. Not sure what they do, but green or eco websites will tell you to avoid them - I believe they've been linked to cancer. As far as I remember, in a small scale study of breast cancer sufferers, parabens were present in the breast tissue of all the women. They have since been removed from deodorants, but as I say, you'll find them in many other toiletries (there are different types, all with long name, and -paraben as a suffix). I personally avoid them like the plague.

puffling · 10/05/2008 23:26

any factor 50 ones, dd is v. pale?

Highlander · 11/05/2008 12:08

parabens are used as a preservative in cosmetics.

parabens mimic oestrogens, so there is the potential to trigger oestrogen-dependent cancers, eg breast.

For boys, they could potentially induce female characteristics - eg breasts (gynaecomastoma)

None of these theories have been clinically proven, but I am very cautious about buying cosmetics with parabens in them.

Highlander · 11/05/2008 12:17

oops, didn't see unscented stuff on Green People. Have ordered the sun scrren, and a deodorant....... gawd I love internet shopping

used2bthin · 11/05/2008 12:18

Just read the post about someones DD screaming when sunscreen is applied, my DD has been doing this, she's got bad excema or psoriasis(waiting to see dermatologist again on friday) so it is obviously stinging her poor thing. Can you buy this suncream in health shops does anyone know or do you have to order online?

swerve · 11/05/2008 17:28

Dr Haushka is all paraben free. the suncream is great and they have a kids high protection one.
