DH cough keeping as awake all night

My DH has been really poorly it started with flu on boxing day with a terrible cough- he is probably only getting 3 hours sleep and he is permanently exhausted due to lack of sleep he has put his back out and his throat is red raw. Been to the GP 3 times now first time they said just a cough second time a tiny bit of crackle on his lungs so prescribed antibiotics and 3rd time still a small crackle on lungs but nothing major so has stronger antibiotics. It is no better - but the worst thing is he disturbs the whole household with his coughing. Nobody gets more than 4 hours a sleep a night and now coming up 3 weeks we are all really struggling to cope - I have an autistic son and he is close to completely loosing it- he has told DH he will never speak to him again. I am considering moving into a hotel with the kids. DH is getting cross as he has no sympathy from us. He has tried steam inhalation, whisky and hot lemon but it will not shift. Our relationship is at an all time low and feel so guilty but I am just so exhausted!

We really are at the end of our tether and I don't honestly know what to do. I just us all to get a good night sleep. Any tips??

Can he go to a hotel instead?

And keep up his neighbours instead with the coughing. 🤦‍♀️😳

I've found the best thing to stop the coughing is codeine. Works a treat, but can only be taken at night as it causes drowsiness.

Codiene doesn't only have to be taken at night, some people are on codeine prescribed 4 times a day, it's fine.

Get a steam vapouriser to plug in overnight. You can get them online or in Boots.

Sounds like he may need some steroids

Get him to see the doctor again

I've just had pneumonia after flu at Christmas. I've slept in the spare room and or on the sofa depending on strength of coughing. Someone needs to move somewhere.

A gp years ago told me to take codeine. Over the counter strength co-codamols (2 tablets, make sure he takes nothing else with paracetamol) and you'll be amazed!

Also, he should try to sleep sitting up, or propped up as much as possible.

Has he tried using a blue inhaler? If not, and he has access to one, it's worth a try (I was prescribed one trying to get rid of a cough that had lasted about 8 weeks).

Nasal decongestant so he's not got nasal drip all night.

Ear plugs dot everyone else.

Go back to the GP. Three weeks is time to consider chest X-ray and asthma assessment. You can develop asthma at any time in your life.

It’s pretty cruel of you to have no sympathy for him btw. It’s not like he is purposely coughing all night.

They won't. Last year I went after I had had a cough for 5 weeks as NHS website said 5 weeks should be seen. When I finally got seem, the drs told me it's now 8 weeks before they will consider escalating and sending you for a scan.

That’s probably a post code lottery based on your GP’s contract with the NHS.
