just wondered if anyone else had experienced this? She knocked it last weekend had a cut lip but was ok then a couple of days ago I noticed it has gone a different colour. Not so much so you would think something was wrong but it is not the same colour as her other teeth.

I would get her to a dentist asap
dd2 knocked hers last week and the dentist said to observe for discolouration of the tooth.

Same here pelvic, (DS2 in our case).

She may have damaged the nerve in the tooth.

Get her checked out.

It has probably died, this happened to my dd too at about that age and it has gone completely grey and translucent.
I took dd to the dentist and she checked it to make sure there wasn't any surrounding infection in the gum, so I think that's probably a good idea for you to take her along.
The dentist keeps an eye on it at her check ups and we have to take her when it falls out too.

oh dear now I feel really bad was worried it was somethign like that..is it likely to effect her next teeth? It isnt hurting and gum looks fine..typically today she was clouted in the side of the mouth by the swing..

my ds2 had this. The tooth had died through impact. It stayed in untill the right age and fell out as normal. His adult tooth grew in its place fine.
Ds one injured his adult tooth which was more of a worry. It was monitored by Guys hospital dentistry and recovered.
Kids hey

Ofcourse this may not be the case with your ds.

mrbojangles · 05/05/2008 20:56

Sorry dd

ds has this, i only noticed when we were on teh tube under flourescent lights. never seen any point in dentist for that, so long as gum is ok....

If it was last weekend it is too soon for the tooth to have died. This discolouration is basically a bleed into the tooth, rather similar to a bruise. The tooth can either recover or die. You may find that the discolouration fades or remains. It is nothing to be concerned with really. Just need to monitor for sensitivty to hot/cold, pain, swelling on gum above the tooth (indication of an abcess). Most of the time the tooth sit s there relatively quietly until it is time to fall out. Occasssionally a course of antibiotice may be needed if an infection occurs (extraction is rarely necessary). The adult tooth shoul d also be absolutely fine. It is only when the adult tooth is still developing and the baby tooth is displaced upwards banging into the developing tooth that damage can occur. Do pop down to your dentist to have her checked out, but certainly don't ;loose sleep over it.

My dd banged her front teeth when she was about three - our dentist said she'd bruised them and we basically had to wait for them to drop out to get new white adult teeth which has happened in the last year or so. She did get a bit of teasing at school about her 'dirty teeth' though which was upsetting since it was unfair.

My ds had this after he fell off a stage as a toddler. The tooth discoloured and I think the nerve died.

The problem we had was that when it came for it to fall out it didn't. The adult tooth started coming through behind it and I was paranoid that it would come through too far back, because it couldn't come down in place of milk tooth.

Kept asking dentist to remove it as I was worried but he kept saying to wait til next check up. Evenutally he did try to extract it and it crumbled into pieces down ds throat! Refused to see that Dentist again, why did he not deal with it when I first asked.....

Anyway, Ds is now 14.8 and his teeth seem fine. Just thought I should let you know in case there are problems with your dc teeth coming out later.

Two people were talking about this today at toddler group so it seems a fairly common problem.
