How to relieve gas pain after appendectomy?

Had to have an emergency appendectomy yesterday afternoon and felt so much better this morning not having the pain from the appendix. But the pain from the gas has been almost just as bad as the appendix pain. Can anyone advise how long it takes to go and what I can do to speed up the process? I'm in so much agony.

I swear by mint tea for trapped wind

Thank you, I did try a mug earlier without any effect, maybe I need to try a couple more.

Chewing gum is good, chew loads

Walk around if you can

Also tea

Peppermint tea but put it in old water and microwave it hot as it infuses more.
And sadly you may need more than one cup full.

Cold water!

There is nothing you can do but wait it out - usually goes within 48-72 hours. It's a bubble of carbon dioxide sitting under your diaphragm, which irritates the nerves. You can get temporary relief by sticking your bum in the air so it's higher than your shoulders.

Peppermint etc will not do anything, the gas is not in your bowel, it's in the abdominal cavity. You have to wait for it to be reabsorbed by your body, you can't burp/fart it out!

The gas pain is usually the worst part, once that settles then you'll be great.

depends a bit on what the OP means by gas pain though doesn't it? Peppermint and gum may well help pain from intraluminal gas, but the shoulder tip pain from the pneumoperitoneum is trickier.

Are you able to lay on your side?I found that position much more comfortable after I had my gallbladder out. I would hug a pillow so it was lengthwise under my head and then down my front.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 17/01/2025 19:09

I had it in my shoulder tips.
it went after about 24 hours 👍🏻

SheridansPortSalut · 17/01/2025 19:13

I found that a hot water bottle on my back was helpful.

Mynewnameis · 17/01/2025 19:15

I remember having peppermint oil in hot water. Plus painkillers

olivewalls · 17/01/2025 20:53

Thanks everyone. I mean the shoulder tip pain, whenever I'm not directly upright it feels like there is so much pressure on my lungs. It's miserable. I am reassured that it seems to last too long, I'm just over 24 hours now 🤞trying all your tips.

the shoulder tip pain is difficult and doesn't respond terribly well to painkillers, but doesn't usually last too long. As PP says it's due to a small amount of carbon dioxide getting stuck inside and irritating the underside of the diaphragm (which shares its innervation with the shoulder tip). Eventually the gas gets absorbed and you exhale it and the pain will settle down. Getting yourself 'bum up' might help a bit as it can shift the gas away from the diaphragm but as soon as you turn head-up again it'll just head back to the diaphragm.
