Fixed brace keeps having bits fall off - is this usual?

ds age 13 had a fixed brace fitted early April. Top and botton. It is a new sort that apparently has quicker results, and they can't have any colours with. I don't knowe the name..........
But since then I have already taken him back with two pads that have come off, leaving the wires loose. Last week, another has come off his front tooth - while cleaning his teeth, and yesterday another pad is off from eating crispy bacon. the first two were at school.
Is this normal - it's driving me nuts - plus the orthadontist is a right old cross patch!

If he is just doing normal eating, then it is not right that the brackets are falling off!

WendyWeber · 05/05/2008 18:53

If the pads come off (you mean the bits which are stuck to the tooth, which the wires are held in by?) that sounds as if they weren't stuck down properly in the first place - although I'm going by my kids' braces, which were the old-fashioned metal-and-rubber-band type, so maybe your DS's are fitted differently?

I wouldn't stand for crossness if all he was doing was eating bacon and cleaning his teeth - it's not as if he was getting stuck into a toffee apple, is it?

Maybe he'd be better off with the old sort and taking a bit longer. (Is this NHS btw or are you paying?)

dont talk to me about braces. they are the bane of my existence.
six weeks she said. six weeks. six months later, and he hasnt managed to keep them in for more than a contnuous week, without either losing them, or damaging them, or someone else damaging them. or......... i asked if he could get fixed breaces instead, and she said no. his teethe werent bad enough.
and now you tell me that even the sodding fixed ones fall off.....

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 05/05/2008 19:03

They are NHS ones. The dentist referred him to the hosp. They took 4 teeth out, and now he sees an orthadonist at a different place to the dentist. It's very posh in there, and i think some of her patients are private. I was told I don't pay because it's obvious he needs corrective action, not just cosmetic!
She said they are a new type... usually they are in 18 months, but these may be quicker!
The bracket fell off last week while cleaning his teeth, and it slipping around on the wire, so not sticking in, so I said leave it until another falls of - and sure enough it did today!
She is very sharp tongued, so thats why I dere not phone again! She originally told him his cleaning wasn't good enough - that scared him enough to do better - scared not to!

If DD & DS had only eaten stuff that didn't break their braces, they'd have been living on soup & mashed potato - and our orthodontist used to get cross too. I think you just have to ignore it - I perfected the smile& nod & 'Oh Dear' routine.

WendyWeber · 05/05/2008 19:11

Maybe she's using him to practise on with these new ones

Could you ask your own dentist for advice before going back to the grumpy one?

fizzbuzz · 05/05/2008 20:06

Oh God...fixed braces...sodding nightmare.

Every time ds goes to the orthodontist (who only works school hours (finishes at 3.00pm)-no late nights, school holidays or any useful time) one of the bloody brackets falls off within 2 weeks, so back we go again, then another one falls off 2 weeks later, etc etc etc, tra la la.....

Sometimes I feel as if we live in that **place, or else I am some sort of boomerang with a homing device in that orthodontist.

So far I have had 4 years of this, with another one to go

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 05/05/2008 21:06

oh ...my...God....! 4 years!
This one only works 3 days a week, til 3pm as well! And it's miles away as well! I will have to build my self up to phoning for an appointment I suppose!

I had a fixed brace as an adult and bits fell off mine too and I was really careful with it. I remember having to get the pliers out at 11pm one night as a bit of wire had broken off and was sticking into the side of my mouth. Seems like they aren't durable enough for the purpose. The orthodontists probably get grumpy because all their patients keep coming back as bits have fallen off but just try and give you the impression that it is just you that are having the problems.

fizzbuzz · 05/05/2008 21:28

Oh, and of course, another bracket fell off on Friday, just in time for Bank Holiday, and ds has SAT's all next week, so getting an appt in between these AND ortho's random working hours is going to be fantastic. I just can't wait........the fun never stops!

stitch · 05/05/2008 21:30

maybe crooked teeth arent so bad then?

fizzbuzz · 05/05/2008 21:39

Actually we were first referred when ds was 8. He's 14 now. OMG that's 6 years!

Has been wearing a brace for 2 1/2 years, but even at 8 we were in and out evey six weeks....just in case....never any useful appointments...never ending merry-go-round....rant...rant...

Crystaltipsandalaistar · 05/05/2008 22:58

thanks for your help - will pluck up courage to ring in the week. and tell him to clean teeth gently, and not eat bacon...

She really shouldn't be getting grumpy. I think it's quite common for them to become detached. DD1s orthodontist is reluctant to fit hers in July as we are planning an August holiday and said it would be better to delay the fitting than to have a problem on holiday.
