Why would someone choose the Mirena coil over a 'normal' coil?

deciding which is best for me but not sure why I would go for one that has hormones over one that doesn't?

it is MUCH more effective, normally.

I hve had it twice. Unfortunately, first time I had it it failed - but my GP contacted the maker and I was the ONLY person for whom it failed in 2003 (dd2 now 4!!) I liked it then.

Had it again in Jan this year but had it removed after it really made me depressed.

Most people have no bother with it. I did, unfortunately!

no periods!

Lulumama · 05/05/2008 11:52

incredibly effective contraception, no periods, no PMT .... if it works , it works brilliantly. it seems to suit you or not,IFYSWIM

morningpaper · 05/05/2008 11:56

reduces period flow by approx 97% over 12 months (IIRC), so little or no periods

therefore can reduce anaemia

reduces ovulation massively (75% to begin with), so less chance of post-fertilisation action

Batting for the normal coil team - the mirena also often causes depression and weight gain.

3littlefrogs · 05/05/2008 12:03

If you need it for contraception and perimenopausal extremely heavy, constant bleeding that can only be controlled by progesterone replacement, it is safe and effective and uses a much lower, local dose of progesterone than taking tablets.

A "normal" coil would be more likely to increase the bleeding.

The mirena coil is as effective as sterilisation, but is reversible.

AFAIK potential side effects are no greater than those associated with oral contraception, which deliver higher doses of hormones and carry an increased risk of developing blood clots.

katierocket · 05/05/2008 12:20

Oh OK. I have had normal coil before and it was fine but I know lots of people rave about the Mirena. I don't like the idea of the hormones as I always hated being on the pill although I think it's different hormones isn't it?

I feel very sick and my depression is worse with any other hormones than my natural ones (pregnancy is a nightmare with all the extra hormones), so I knew mirena was a no go for me.

3littlefrogs · 05/05/2008 17:40

I know the mirena doesn't suit everybody. I could never take the pill because i had horrendous side effects. The pill delivers much bigger doses of hormones, systemically, whereas the mirena delivers a fraction of the dose, directly to the lining of the uterus. It was ideal for me because it stopped the torrential bleeding, and took me relatively smoothly through the 3 years it took to get through the menopause.

But everyone is different and what suits one person won't suit another. sometimes it is a case of trial and error.

Psychomum5 · 05/05/2008 17:47

I had no choice....I have the mirena coil to help with endometriosis.

don;t need ot for contraception as DH had had the snip after DS2 was born (altho he is now rather pee'd off as he effectivly went thro an op for nothing), so for me, it was health reasons....and it has done as it needed, periods light and so much less hurty than before (I often couldn't walk for the pain before, and would flood terribly, plus look 6mths pregnant which was also hell!).

having said that tho, headaches are increased and I felt crappy and low in myself for the first 6mths.

I now love it tho, not least cos of the lack of pain and bleeding compared to before.

Blandmum · 05/05/2008 17:49

Beacuse the one with hormones is a more effecient contraceptive and stops most women having periods. The ordinary coil can make your periods heavier

Blondehelen · 05/05/2008 17:58

Had the standard coil as I didn't want hormones, but made periods very heavy and me anaemic. Therefore have mirena coil now but not sure either due to weight gain. So think dh is going to have to have the snip!

Blandmum · 05/05/2008 18:00

The pill delivers a larger does of Oestrogen and progestogen (in the combined pill, progestogen only in the mini pill)

most people are affected more by the oestrogen than the progestogen.

Mareina coild only has progestogen

shouldbeworking · 05/05/2008 18:36

Mirena coil has significant side effects for some. I refused the fpc's considerable pressre to try one because I have bad migraines and on some websites this is listed as a contraindication. All fpc workers, gps etc that I have come into contact with seem to really promote the mirena to the point where I wondered if they got bonuses for how many they fitted!! The only way you will know whether it suits you is to try it. The side effects may be managable for you if the pros are worth it. I know someone who did gain weight with it but as it sorted out her previously horribly heavy periods she was willing to put up with a few extra pounds. For others this wouldn't be acceptable ifyswim.

Nothing is every straightforward is it!

shouldbeworking · 06/05/2008 14:47

Nope!!

nailpolish · 06/05/2008 14:49

i have a copper coil

didnt want the mirena and all the horrible side effects the hormones ahve with it

mimsum · 06/05/2008 14:56

I had horrible 2 week long periods with normal coil - had the mirena fitted three years ago - the first 3 months I spotted every day and was just about to ask to have it taken out when hey presto it stopped and I've never had a period since

no significant adverse side effects for me and the no periods is a pretty hefty benefit
