DD2 poo's too much

DD2 is always pooing. She was bf as a baby and would poo after each feed but she'll be 2 in July and she's still the same. A good day is about 2 a day but it's mainly about 6 a day and like today there's been over 10 a day. She isn't ill she just seems to poo a lot and as a result she is always getting a sore bum. She isn't underweight and eats a normal amount for a child her age. She is no longer bf but likes two big bottles of milk a day. She doesn't have juice only water. She has a huge varied diet but we keep it all healthy.

Do you think I should take her to the doctors or just be happy that she does poo? DD1 had to have loads of meds at her age to get her to poo but this was due to her having a lot of health problems.

Oh DD2 was 11 weeks early but she's never had any problems since she left hospital.

TIA for any advice.

Just to add her poo's are never solid, they're quite soft sometimes a bit watery but not like very loose. She's always been like this though. What she has to eat the night before will be in her nappy the next day, for example sweetcorn, peas, carrots can be clearly seen in her stools.

So is there anyone out there with any advice?

The good thing is that she seems healthy, eats well, is not in distress.

The loose stools and the frequency DOES, however, suggest that something is not quite right and I think it would be worth discussing with your health visitor or GP to set your mind at rest.

There is something called toddler diaorhea(sp).

DS2 was very loose until he was about 3.

Is she healthly in all other ways/ Growth, weight gain etc?

I put it down to the fact he loved his fruit and veg so much but I'd def mention it to your GP/HV

OMG I can't believe we finally have figured out what's going on. Thankyou. Will still take her to the doctor's though to make sure it is this and to see if there's anything they suggest.

I'm glad she'll grow out of it but it will make toilet training harder, I've already tried sitting her on it but she doesn't like to sit still so she up's and leaves after 10 seconds.

Ds2 had this - toddler diarrhea - if you have probs with nursery (we did - they had a policy of sending home kids with loose stools which meant the poor kid hardly went) you can go to the GP who will give you a letter saying there is nothing medically wrong.

What we found out was that the main culprits of the condition are:

  • too much fibre for a toddler (i.e. too much fruit/veg, high fibre foods such as brown bread & pasta).
  • too much squash
  • not enough or low fat dairy (low fat anything isn't suitable for a child under the age of 5).

In our case, the solution was to go back to white bread (we'd been having half/half white/brown and as most of his diet seemed to be toast and sandwiches, it was a huge issue), encouraged him to have yoghurt instead of fruit for pudding in the evening and asked nursery to give him milk as a drink instead of squash.

While his stools were still soft after that, they became much more solid within just a few days. Toilet training became easier at that point too.

Hope this helps
