Do/Did your babies do this with their eyes?

DS2 is 10 weeks old. He has been referred for further tests on his eyes as he is not following objects yet.
I am sure he can see (although Dr was unsure) but obviously am concerned at the not following objects.

Anyway, I have noticed something that he does and am wondering if it is a normal baby thing or if I should mention it to the pediatrician..

When he is very tired or occasionally when I try and get him to follow objects by waving it in front of his face, his eyes will move around in different directions fairly quickly and it looks like he is not in control of them.

Does anyone remember their baby doing anything similar when tired or is it unusal?

found this when i googled

Your newborn baby?s eye movements may not be well coordinated at first. His eyes may move independently of each other, and this is perfectly normal. It takes time for your newborn baby to learn to use his eyes and strengthen his eye muscles. The problem should resolve itself by the time your baby is three months old

sound like its to do with the fact that he was tired more than anything else.

2.4,mine never did this.Dunno if this will make you feel worse but did not want to ignore your post

Are you OK??

It is very worrying when you feel something is wrong.

(My second child has SN,I was worried from her being tiny )

When are the tests going to be??

sending hugs to you and baby 2.4 xxxx

To be honest I can't remember what my babies did and when they did it, the first few months just passed in a blur.

Does he look at your face at all?

I hope you get good news when you go to see the specialist, will you have to wait to be seen?

Good luck.

Thank you for your replies.
Yes, I am ok wrinklytum. Just worrying and waiting for his hospital appt to come through!
I think the tests they do involve putting drops in his eyes and using equipment to look at the back of them to see how much vision he has.

It was picked up at his 6 week check that he wasnt doing what he should be vision wise by then and he still isnt following things now (keep trying to get him to!)
I am sure he can see to some extent though, as he smiles now and sometimes he does smile at me when I am trying my best to not make a noise, so he wouldnt know I was there if he couldnt see me would he?

Ecmo - thats what I am hoping, that if he has weak muscles controlling his eyes that it will sort itself out over time.

Hope we dont have to wait too long for the appt so we know where we stand.

serin - he does appear to look at my face sometimes, but other times he seems to be looking past me or over my head.
Its so hard to tell, especially as I am always chatting away to him etc whether he is looking at me or if he is looking towards the direction of my voice iykwim

Dr says up to 8 weeks wait for an appt!

When about to fall asleep as in when they are trying hard to keep their eyes open (if this is what you mean?) all my babies have done this and their eyesight is fine.

2point4kids · 04/05/2008 22:42

Ledogy - yes thats exactly when he does it! I am so glad that yours did it too, that really reassures me. thank you.

Its so tempting to look for things and jump to conclusions when you are worried about something isnt it?

All three of mine did it, ds2 still does and he's 17 weeks.

paranoidmuch · 04/05/2008 22:47

I also wanted to say that my DS hardly ever looked at me when he was really little (I was a bit hurt by it because I read that babis look at their mums while breastfeeding and its a bonding thing!) He usually looked past me or over my head or something. Anyway, 11 months on and his eyesight is fine (I think!) and he looks at me all the time now

Ledodgy · 04/05/2008 22:50

In fact i'm sure my 2.5 year old still does it too.
