Hi, my little cherub (!) starting teething on Thursday, red cheeks, hot face (no temperature to indicate fever though) lots of dirty nappies (5 today), disturbed sleep, dribbling, grabbing gums etc and wanting to put everything in her mouth - sounds like teething?

Anyway, I have tried calpol, nurofen liquid for babies, those granules, a gel and a cooled teething toy - she is still crying in pain.

She is managing to feed, as long as I give her calpol before hand but once the pain relief wears off she just cries - any ideas? Anyone know how long this will last, its got worse since Thursday so 4 solid days of it now ... ?

Trying to get her to drink cooled boiled water for hydration but she not keen, she has wet nappies though so not too worried, her temp is 36.7 (was told that over 39 is a fever)

x

Over 37 is a fever. Yes this sounds like teething, poor little mite. Sounds like there's not much you can do other than what you're doing. Just lots of feeds and cuddles. Once the tooth is through she'll be so much better - afer 4 days it can't be long now. My DS had a horrible time with his early teething as well - strangely the huge molars he's getting now aren't giving him nearly as much pain. It will get better.

she will be ok, do everything you can until she gets to sleep or calms down. it will take a few days and will pass....

if you find yourself pacing with a crying baby in the middle of the night, turn on baby tv the music and images will distract her and maybe shell be able to relax and get back to sleep

thank you, do you think that the tooth might actually be about to come through then ... ?

Thought that would be months away and that this would just be the initial rumblings ... ? Was worried that she would be like this for the next 6 months.

Have carried her around all day, mainly in the sling. Feel very sorry for her as she wants to be happy and smiles at me but then cries, she must be very confused. She is asleep at the moment, am off to bed myself shortly - will see how it goes.

Strangely she had refused to breast feed for the last few weeks so I had to change to 50/50 breast milk and formula but today all she has wanted to do is to breast feed and I was surprised that I had any milk left, luckily her crying seems to have brought it back though.

She is very close to the fever mark then, should I take her to see doctor? Its only our cheap mothercare thermometer that says 36.7 - might take her tomorrow to be on safe side.

Thank you, she is our first baby so its all new to me

pamelat it sounds more like a bug than teething. i always found ibuprofen much better than paracetamol for getting temperature down. you can combine them too. anyway you are doing by far the best with sling and bf. no need to bother with water if she is having bm.

I was rubbing her gums with my finger (my mum's advice!) and she really liked that but its not something that I had ever done to her before, I have no idea whether she liked it because it relieves the pain or whether it was just a novelty to her.

I was trying to look in her mouth but her tongue usually gets in the way, there is a white dot on her lower gum, its tiny though.

She's very young to get a tooth?

Oh no, sorry, I didn't mean that. 37 is normal, so I would count anything over 37 as a fever albeit mild. 39 would be severe I would say. Her temperature is normal, don't worry.

You know I can't remember when they're supposed to get their first teeth. Isn't that terrible? I suppose it could just be rumblings, but if she's in that much pain I dunno. Can you feel or see anything? If not, then I guess it could go on for a while yet. Sorry if I gave you false hope.

Pheebe · 04/05/2008 21:48

36.7 is perfectly normal!

for temps 37-37.5 I don't do anything at all (normal flutuations really)

over 37.5 I might give a single dose of calpol or neurofen if ds is really grumpy,

over 38 strip off, sponge and calpol/neurofen

over 40 off to the docs or hospital for a check

Twinklemegan · 04/05/2008 21:48

X posted. I'd say white dot equals tooth. Some babies are born with a tooth or two.

pamelat · 04/05/2008 21:51

Oops sorry, I misunderstood

She does feel warm but then its mainly her face that feels hot, temperature taken under arm.

If she is still upset by Tuesday, I will at least take her to pharmacist - maybe they can look in her mouth. I dont want to be giving her calpol and teething granules for no reason, but then the calpol certainly seems to be helping her.

Am off to bed as could be in for a tough night! Thanks

combination of calpol and nuerofen....alternate them every 2 hours as only Calpol has paracetomol in it. The N has anti-inflamatory in it to reduce swelling. Other than what you already have tried nothig really. One thought if you are worried just go to Docs and get her checked out - Ear infections ae prime at this age and its an area that us Mum's cant look into so it may be worth checking out

Our 17 week old has started teething too and screams out in agony, nurofen seems to have worked. The bizarre thing is the white dot he has is where his back teeth will be but the pain seems to be in the front.
