Lemon, honey and hot water will ease the pain of your sore throat a little.

Lots of fluid, plenty of rest, no matter how bored you feel, or how uncomfortable being in bed is. I find that it hurts a little less to drink hot drinks (or very warm). Paracetmol every 4 hours on the dot to keep fever at bay.

If you have not eaten for a while, banana and strawberry smoothie will give you some energy and help with throat too.

I hope you feel better soon Am recovering from it myself.

a soothing warm tea (eg camomile), made with lots of honey

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 04/05/2008 18:44

poor you, I'd rather give birth again than have that. Gargle with salt water solution, paracetomol for the pain and fever, and I know its a cliche but drink lots of fluid.

Rest, rest, rest.

Pavlovthecat · 04/05/2008 18:44

that was meant to be not a cheesy grin!

Sidge · 04/05/2008 18:49

Why can't you see a doc at your out-of-hours service? Tonsillitis is awful, you would need to start antibiotics as soon as possible.

Honey and lemon is soothing, and paracetamol should help.

PenelopePitstops · 04/05/2008 18:55

thanks guys, going to stock up on lemon and honey!

Sip Manuka honey very slowly off the spoon - it is both antiviral and antibacterial. Don't put Manuka honey in hot water as that kills the antibacterial/antiviral element. Hope you feel better soon.

HI there, I have a home remedies book at home and this is what it recomends.

For fast effective releif, nothing beats a saltwater gargle. Salt acts as a mild antiseptic and also draws water out of mucous membranes in the throat, which helps clear phlem. Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water ( as hot as you can tolerate), gargle and spit out. Repeat every hour if necessary.

Hot Lemon with honey. Honey has antibacterial properties which can help speed up healing. It also draws out water from inflamed tissues. This reduces swelling and discomfort. Mix with hot water and add lemon, honey and brandy or whisky for a numbing effect.

Hope this helps and you feel better soon.

Fizzy drinks. The best thing I found for soothing tonsillitis & soothing when I had them removed too.

Pavlovthecat · 04/05/2008 19:05

{blushes} I also found that a Manhattan worked quite well after a few days, when fever had gone but throat and glands were still swollen, whisky numbed throat, alcohol in general made me feel much less like I gave a shite! First few days tho, could not even consider drinking alcohol

RubberDuck · 04/05/2008 19:07

Alternate ibuprofen and paracetamol so you don't overdose (you can only have 4 doses of paracetamol a day, and only 3 of ibuprofen - staggering it means you can cover the whole 24 hrs without going over the limit).

When I get it (and have just finished a bout of laryngitis so really sympathise) I love twinings lemon & ginger tea - I usually make it with a large blob of honey, too. Just a variation on the lemon & honey theme really

cocolepew · 04/05/2008 19:08

Vicks, rubbed over your throat and up to your ears. Vicks cures everything.

RubberDuck · 04/05/2008 19:09

(and tbh, I don't tolerate antibiotics well, so I always ride it out with the painkillers and warm lemon/honey drinks route - imo it takes about the same length of time to recover anyway)

Nappyzone · 04/05/2008 19:15

I gargle with solphadeine and as per rubber duck also ibuprofen staggering to cover the whole time - the two hrs after the paracetemol i also gargle with salt water , drink buckets of water. This week i tried soluble asprind and staggered gargling that with the solphadeine as i had no ibuprofen in, then I genreally throw myself at the doctors mercy and beg penicillin. I am due to get mine removed on the 26 June - although i am possibly wimping out....

tassisssss · 04/05/2008 19:17

gargle salt water

you can get lozengers that actually help a bit rather than just taste like sweets...think they're called dequacaine

keep drinking

try to rest

alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen

it's grim, hope you're OK

foxinsocks · 04/05/2008 19:18

there;s some spray you get from the chemist

think it is called Chloraseptic Throat Spray (it's cherry flavour - numbs the throat. Is very good).

Bridie3 · 04/05/2008 19:20

Second Manuka honey. It's now my family cure-all: from throats to septic toes!

RubberDuck · 04/05/2008 19:21

I did once cave and begged ABs after a week of pain... but then the GP gave me the wrong antibiotic (the one I react badly to - erythromycin... I'm allergic to penicillin) and I spent hours on the bathroom floor unable to stand up I was so nauseous after just one dose.

Got a scrip for a different type of antibiotic but never bothered to claim it and recovered on my own within 24hrs.

Have avoided GPs with it ever since

saltwater gargles

rocket lollies

Tonsilitis is truly horrid. Take it easy.

Celery · 04/05/2008 19:38

gargle with diluted TCP.

mypandasgotcrabs · 04/05/2008 20:07

Nappyzone, DON'T wimp out! I had mine out about 6 years ago, I had suffered for over 2 years with almost constant tonsillitis (Once it had cleared up, it was back within a fortnight). The 1st week after the op is nasty, plus I was bf ds1, so couldn't take strong painkillers, but the op was so worth it!

Smamfa · 04/05/2008 20:09

ICECREAM! Honestly. Middle of the night is the best time.
