Suspected DVT - worried

PoppyBlunt · 08/01/2025 23:08

I've had intense calf and thigh pain for the last 24hrs
I spoke to GP who sent me to a and e . D dimer result at a and e was 1250 (should be under 500).
I've been given blood thinners for tonight and tomorrow and have a scan on Friday.
Does anyone know if this is a typical treatment plan?
I'm in loads of pain and worried.
Any advice appreciated.

Are you in the hospital now?

Did they do an ultrasound?

AmberAstrid · 09/01/2025 00:08

Yes that's what happened when i went last, given about a week of an injectable thinner and then booked for ultrasound to check for a clot & a further blood test, thankfully was clear .

Tbh I probably over reacted then as my d-dimer was just over the 500 limit but I'd had a DVT some years before. I thought I pulled a muscle and only went to GP when my leg was going a blue shade and ended up in hospital for a week. The treatment then was warfarin for 3 months to dissolve the clot with regular blood tests.

PoppyBlunt · 09/01/2025 00:09

Thank you for replying. They sent me home, with an ultrasound booked for Friday.

I know it's worrying but a blood thinner would probably be the treatment if the scan confirms a clot. I'm glad the scan is soon.

thaegumathteth · 09/01/2025 00:31

Yep you're on the treatment you'd be on if they knew for certain there was a clot.

Are you worried about pulmonary embolisms? If so the treatment for that is also blood thinners (potentially higher doses) but if you have no symptoms of one now then the blood thinners you are on should stop you from developing one.

PoppyBlunt · 09/01/2025 05:16

Thank you.
Yep, just worrying as it sounds so serious, but I've been sent home.

Yes. Totally normal. I had a huge clot in my calf and one had migrated to my thigh and was on the move. I was already feeling wheezy.

Injected immediately. Sent home with clexane to inject for two weeks (then tablets for 6 months) and they cleared me to fly from NZ to the UK 24 hours later!

Haemotologist said as soon on blood thinners all good.

getahhtmapub · 09/01/2025 06:52

FYI it's the same treatment if you actually have a clot. Mine was found and confirmed by ultrasound.

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 09/01/2025 06:54

Yes hopefully you'll be in less pain with it soon when the blood thinners kick in properly. Mine took about 2 days I think. Hope the treatment goes smoothly!

FeegleFrenzy · 09/01/2025 06:58

Ok, I sadly consider myself a bit of an amateur clot expert for one reason or another.

firstly you may not have a clot. D dimer can be raised for other reasons including muscle strain. I had terrible calf pain once (I was crying it was so bad) and my d dimer was really raised. When I had my scan the next day there was no clot.

i know it’s scary that you th8nk you may have a clot and have been sent home but the meds you have now is the treatment. So you are safe. Obviously if you get any chest pain, or shortness of breath at any point go straight back to hospital but that’s unlikely. Your body will start to break down any clot and the meds will stop it getting bigger…..that’s if you have one!

if you do have a clot then the chances are nothing will be done apart from long term blood thinners (tablets). You’ll be referred to haematology who will assess your risk factors and decide how long you need to stay on thinners for. Very rarely people need surgery to remove a clot if there’s a very big one.

my daughter is on blood thinners for life after having clots in her lungs. She had multiple clots (at the same time) was given an injection, a pack of pills to take home and we were in and out of a&e within a few hours. That was very scary leaving knowing her lungs were riddled with clots.

Thank you - really helpful replies.
I was given dalpetarin yesterday and have some to inject this evening.

Sorry - me again.
I had a private scan earlier today as I was getting so worked up. It showed no dvt in my painful leg.
I was feeling much less anxious, but subsequently mentioning to my sister, she's suggested that given my high d dimer level, it might have been in the leg and now broken off.
I'm worried again.
Does anyone know if the leg ultrasound would show evidence of a clot that has subsequently moved?
Panicking! Thank you

Not sure. All I can tell you is that when the nhs also found no clot in my leg there was no talk at all about doing a scan of my lungs. So guess they didn’t think it likely. If you do have a clot in your lungs you would normally have some chest pain and/or shortness of breath. Dd was screaming in agony though guess it may not be that bad for everyone.

FeegleFrenzy · 09/01/2025 13:11

I would ring them back and ask them though, you paid for a service so make use of it! 😁

she's being daft. The D-dimer test can be raised for loads of reasons.

nonevernotever · 09/01/2025 16:33

I was diagnosed with spontaneous thrombophlebitis on Monday this week, had a scan on Tuesday that confirmed the presence of a large clot in the superficial vein system and started on blood thinners then. I asked if I needed to worry about a blood clot already on the move or about bits breaking off and was told no, and that the blood thinners were the right treatment for that too, so nothing to worry about. I've since developed cellulitis in that leg, so on antibiotics as well, but that's another story

XmasSocks · 10/01/2025 01:53

My d-dimer has been 1300 with no blood clot

Jaapssthia · 10/01/2025 01:57

I had no chest pain, I was just a bit breathless yet I had multiple clots in both lungs. This was picked up on a CT scan.
