Magnesium and BP

Has anyone noticed a link between taking high strength magnesium tablets and BP?
I started taking magnesium bisglycinate (300mg tablets, 3 x daily as recommended) for peri symptoms and better sleep. I've always had low bp around 115/65, but since taking these my bp has dropped to around 100/57. I'm not sure if it's the tablets or something else but has anyone else noticed the link? I think I'll be stopping these soon

Edit: meant to say the daily dose is 300mg, not 900mg!

Magnesium drops blood pressure. We give it iv as anaesthetists for this reason (and many more)

Lees83 · 08/01/2025 16:31

@Destiny123 thank you for this. I think I'm going to drop down to one tablet per day instead of 3. I took it to help with the my sleep and some palpitations due to perimenopause, but the one I bought is easily absorbed and high strength so probably not sensible for me to be taking 3 per day as my bp is low anyway

But I was wondering if anyone who takes high strength magnesium has experienced the same thing?

Gosh I've never heard of that being a thing! I have naturally low blood pressure and also have started taking magnesium for sleeping. Maybe better to stop.

Destiny123 · 08/01/2025 16:52

Are you going dizzy because of it? It's not like it's low enough it would remotely bother me if I saw it on a patients observation chart at work

Foxgloverr · 08/01/2025 16:52

I haven't experienced this. My BP is usually about 90/60 and goes up to 100/60 max. I take 1000mg magnesium bisglicynate and haven't noticed any change. I take it for muscle twitching and spasms and it helps a lot.

Destiny123 · 08/01/2025 16:53

I take magnesium all the time, it's a wonder drug for everything. My bp is normally 90/60, can be as low as 80. Shrug.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 08/01/2025 16:54

Oh interesting. I've been monitoring my BP, again and it's in that raised section.

If I wasn't taking, magnesium it would be in the red section then 😬

I have normal/low BP and this hasn't been affected at all by taking magnesium.

As a woman in peri, it's recommended to take up to 500mg of elemental magnesium per day. Note this is elemental so check how much of your dose this applies to (it should say on the bottle how much is elemental magnesium if it's a good quality supplement).

menopausalfart · 08/01/2025 16:57

I was taking it for a while and experiencing horrible nightmares. I didn't realise it was the mag until I stopped taking it.

Same here. It’s a known side effect.

Lees83 · 08/01/2025 17:29

@Destiny123 I wouldn't say I felt dizzy, just light headed which is why I took my bp.

It sounds like it's not the magnesium causing my low bp based off what everyone is saying. I've recently had some bloods and have low hb (10.5) and ferritin 17, could this be the reason?

Its v unlikely to make a significant difference in oral doses. When I want to drop someone's bp intraoperatively I give 3-5grams iv and that often dose nothing in many people

Destiny123 · 08/01/2025 19:06

Your iron deficiency is much more likely the issue. Take supplements once a day with fresh orange and no tea or coffee a couple of hours either side

Destiny123 · 08/01/2025 19:08

But iron deficiency doesn't cause low BP they arent related (I was meaning the iron and the light-headedness being related

Magamaga · 08/01/2025 19:10

Sorry @Lees83 but can I ask which brand magnesium everyone is taking? I’m looking for a new one.
