Vitamin D deficiency - symptoms?

BellissimoGecko · 06/01/2025 07:43

I've just had a blood test and found that my Vitamin D is very low. I've been prescribed 6000iu tablets one a week for the next six weeks.

I've had sore v muscles for a while, and I've been feeling muscle weakness too - having problems getting up from the floor, etc. Can this all be related to a lack of Vitamin D? So should this get better? I had no idea that this was a symptom of Vit D deficiency.

I'm also deficient in Vitamin B12, so having injections for that. Has anyone else had the same? Does it help?

I have the same issues and have my first b12 injection next week

I had the same this time last year. I was deficient (not just low) in vitamin D it turned out, and went onto 8000iu for a few weeks, and now take a daily maintainence dose to keep me going. My diet is good, although I don’t eat fish or liver which you find D in - but do eat plenty of eggs and cheese, plus a daily glass of orange juice.

My main symptoms that triggered me getting a GP appointment were joint / muscle pain - particularly swollen fingers and sore legs, mainly my knees. I could barely move some mornings and had to shuffle down the stairs on my bum. Once I got moving I was fine, it was just getting up!

I get the occasional bad day now, but generally all is good.

Yes both mine were deficient and I think they go together in a way. My skin was dry and my hair coming out when washing. I also felt tired and very crabby!! Yes I defo feel better taking them( constantly not just 6 weeks) and levels are in normal range now. Dr said to take as most people are deficient anyway!
I think most of this is linked to the shitty menopause!

jasjas3008 · 06/01/2025 07:53

In our cycling club is a hospital consultant, he says everyone should take a high dose Vit D supplement from Oct to April and all of the year if you work predominantly in doors.

I've been taking 4000iu daily, no particular symptoms but to avoid getting winter colds etc.
Touch wood, so far so good, i used to get everything going.

BellissimoGecko · 06/01/2025 08:31

Thanks. I've been finding the same when I get up - I have to walk like a duck first before my calf muscles want to cooperate.

My Vit D is currently 20 nmol (should be 50-150) - should it be back to normal at the end of the six weeks? Or will it take longer?

Are you more likely to be deficient in vitamins during the menopause?

I suffered from exhaustion, aching, brain fog and anxiety, and it took around 3 months of twice weekly vit d before I was back to my normal.

3rdCoffeeThisMorning · 06/01/2025 09:04

I had bone pain, depression, anxiety (everything felt like Final destination scene), fatigue, brain fog and at one point slight suicidal thoughts.
Fun.
Dissappeared after a week with if I remember correctly 80,000 dose for 5 or 6 weeks.

I can still absolute say when it dips again simply because things like I feel panic the lift I am getting on will malfunction and I will probably die. It wouldn't cross my mind normally!

BellissimoGecko · 06/01/2025 09:09

Ah, my tablets are 50000 units, not 5000.

Maybe I've been feeling like this for so long that it feels normal for me? I will look forward to positive changes in mood and anxiety!

Hopefully you will see the change soon! It's amazing. I felt like old me rather than sluggish depressed version and it honestly hit me how big difference there was. I am generally happy bouncy person

Yes, both deficiencies can go hand in hand. I had the injections for B12 and a 1 off injection I paid for privately for D as I was suffering from thyroid issues and heart palpitations/panic attacks and being largely ignored by Dr until I had an embolism. It is hard to know what helped which symptoms but the B12 helped my dry skin so much and I actually felt like my head became lighter. Just feeling like I can do things rather than slumping because I have to lift a bag and wondering what the point is has been incredible. It's a slow process back (also had anemia so on iron every other day, ferritin -really helped breathing - and folate). It's been 12 months now and I feel like I did in my 20's for the first time in 20 years. It is a complete tragedy that so few doctors take this side of health seriously and preventative medicine is left to the public when the food quality is declining so much.

When I’m low on vitamin D my moods are terrible, I’m very irritable. Aching muscles and joints, exhaustion and brain fog. When I was first told I was low on vitamin D and took the prescribed tablets I felt so much better

Hi OP. I've recently joined the vitamin D and vitamin B12 Facebook groups.

According to them, vitamin D should be over 200nmol. Mine is currently 85 and it has taken a year of 4000iu daily to reach that point from a start of 52.

I am now following the FB group advice. Taking 8000iu vitamin D plus 100iu of vitamin K which helps it absorb. Plus I take two magnesium malate in the morning (150mg of elemental mag) and then in the evening i take 300mg of elemental magnesium glycinate.

The NHS website says 'Do not take more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) of vitamin D a day as it could be harmful.'

If it helps I was 20, took 10,000 iu for 6 weeks it brought them up to 128. So it'll definitely take a few weeks to get going but you'll feel so much better for it. I take 10,000 iu daily anyway as we will never be sufficient in this climate (uk) especially through winter months, maybe take some magnesium too as vitamins can deplete in other areas x

Wow. I'm glad that the injections helped your symptoms so much!

My mum takes 20,000 iu long term so I'm pretty sure I'm happy to take the risk in the short term to try and increase my levels.

I've had several years of abysmal health, viruses, dizziness plus I'm hypermobile so constantly straining things and three surgeries this year, I need all the help I can get.

I'm only taking this much temporarily for a few months plus adding in some folate as my folate levels are low whilst my ferritin is really good.

Mykidsmyworld83 · 23/04/2025 22:14

I take 20000iu a week, have done for 13 weeks my vitamin d levels was 14, and honestly my joints and my knees are killing, I can't wait for my levels to get back to normal
