night coughs...help!

my dd 2.5, has had a really bad cough at night for the last couple of days. I'm not at all clear about childrens cough medicine anymore so i've just been waking her with a drink of water to try and ease it. Her coughing doesn't seem to wake her up, just everyone else! I've tried a vaporiser thingy but that didn't work. Has anyone got any suggestions or are there certain cough medicines that are ok to use? She hasn't been coughing much during the day and is very well in herself.

have you raised the head of her bed/cot?

not sure about cough medicines personally.

DS 2 1/2 gets this fairly frequently. Raisng the end of the bed/cot does help. Cough medicines aren't really worth it for us, a spoonful of honey in warm water seems to help though.

she's in a toddler bed and the only way i can raise her head would be with extra pillows. Is this ok do you think? Are there any natural remedies that anyone knows of that may help?

I make an infusion of thyme (big handful of thyme in a cup of boiling water and leave it to cool) and add honey to it. I then give it to DS on a spoon when he coughs a lot. Sometimes I just give a spoon of honey, Manuka if I am feeling rich.

Can't you put phone books under the legs at one end of the toddler bed? I can't see why that wouldn't work.

Yes, prop her up with extra firm pillows - use some karvol on cotton wool - or other vapouriser. But she does need to propped up.

if it continues see your GP - night time coughing can be sign of asthma
