If you have or have a family member that does have the trait do you mind describing any of the issues or symptoms you may have had please or anything you do to support.

My dd 8 has the trait, she complains a lot about joint pain, we’ve seen GP who said hips are normally aligned, her posture and walk are good too and that is that basically. I mentioned the trait but they don’t think it’s linked and said she shouldn’t have no issues because of it.

Dd does exercise but not excessively, does normal after school clubs like swimming & gymnastics, walk to and from school, they do PE daily in school for a 20 min session, she’s a healthy weight for her age.
Does suffer from stomach pains too quite often but could be also be anxiety? she’s a sensitive thing but I don’t want to almost dismiss the pain she complains of because
of that

Joints could be something else, for example I have SCT but also hyper-mobility.
SCT is more an issue at altitude or depth so mountains or scuba diving.
Top level athletes have issues but not sure if affects basic kids stuff.

I carry the trait and it has had no effect on my joints or bones. The only way it’s affected me is that I’ve been on and off anaemic for most of my life, my now adult daughter is the same. Diet plays a big role for us, iron rich foods are really important.

Hi,

I also don’t think the issues with joints are due to SCT. This would only be an issue with full blown SCD.

I agree with Grapesandcheseseplease, and it seems that I get anaemia very easily. It is funny that the internet says otherwise, but I always felt tired with it.

They don’t tell you that SCT also affects diabetic blood tests - you have to make sure you mention this status because it can give you a different reading. Also, extra oxygen is needed during operations when under general anaesthetic.
