Removal of facial mole?

VanillaPumpkin · 02/05/2008 21:02

I have a protuberant mole on my face that I would now like removed. It is changing colour (getting paler) and I don't like it any more.
Has anyone had this done? How much did it cost? Was there a big scar? How much did it hurt (wimp emoticon)?
TIA

I had one on the side of my face, about the size of the end of a pencil. My GP removed it in the surgery, took about 5 mins under a local, it was no problem at all, scabbed for a week, now a pale scar.

Oh that is good. How did you get the GP to remove it? I have been to the dermatologist at the hospital and they said they won't do it on the NHS...

I had one removed too. Was referred by gp to plastic surgeon at local hosp. They did it quickly and it scabbed over then it was gone. Great.

Jane, was that on the nhs?

Dh had his removed at the doctors too. It was causing a problem when he shaved, because he kept 'nicking' it, with the razor. Not suggesting that you take the shaving route, obviously! But I can't see any reason why, if you tell the doctor its becoming a problem with being sensative to makeup or something, he won't do it for you.

I told my gp that my dh and mil were concerned it was growing ;) and obviously I couldn't see it cos it was on the side near my hairline, and he whipped it off the next week.
Try your gp and say it is growing, I work in a lab and we get the remains of moles to check every single day. Can't see why your doc won't do it.

I have been to the GP as it was growing for a bit. I got referred to the Dermatology dept at the hospital who confirmed it was completely normal and also said they wouldn't be able to take it off .
I think I will go back to the docs and try someone different. It all sounds very easy to sort out .
at me trying the shaving problem route.
Thanks for the feedback.

Hi, yes it was on the nhs.
Its a few years ago, but it was quick and quite painless. They put some local in before gently 'shaving' it away in fine layers. x

I think I am being diddled. Will def go to Docs again.

No experience of facial moles but have had loads of other moles removed, including a malignant melanoma.

I can't understand how the dermatology dept can say that your mole is "completely normal" without removing it to check it? That's the only way to confirm it is OK. At least that's what I've always been told (even pre-melanoma) - so they've always been happy to remove ones they thought "looked fine" if I wasn't sure about them.

If it has grown and changed colour, go back to GP, insist on another referral (if GP can't/won't remove it), then insist that dermatology remove it on these 2 grounds - perfectly reasonable imho

Thank you for this. I have been to the dermatology dept at the hospital twice now about the mole and another patch on my face. They have photographed the patch and looked very closely at both mole and patch with magnification and prodding etc but are not interested in removing either. The mole has stopped growing and is now getting paler exactly as they told me it would for a 'normal' facial mole so I am not worried about it anymore from a skin cancer pov but I don't like the look now. When it was dark I could pretend it was a beauty spot but now it is lighter I don't like it. I will def go back to GP. Thank you.
