Sugar intolerance?

Hello there. Just wondering if I may have a sugar intolerance. With Xmas I’ve been consuming mince pies, biscuits, chocolate etc and today I’ve had a bit but less than the other days and I feel awful. Massive headache, bad stomach, more anxiety than normal and weird feeling in general. Is this linked to sugar? I felt like this around Easter too.

It's more likely to be the fats in those products.

GettingFestiveNow · 29/12/2024 17:23

Alcohol?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/12/2024 18:08

Thank you. Can they cause those issues then? I don’t drink.

Definitely could be sugar overload. I don’t tolerate sugars (from all sources, high carbohydrates etc.) especially since going low carb 8 years ago. Sugar is inflammatory, and can make joint problems worse, can cause palpitations, and upset stomach symptoms.

StMarie4me · 29/12/2024 18:48

The answer is yes. Try cutting out sugars and reducing refined carbs for a week and see how you feel.

Thank you both.

Yeah, I count myself as 'sugar intolerant'. Had to go gold turkey to even see the problem. I was on a rollercoaster of sugar high followed by crash for years, even decades so I hardly even noticed it.

Fat doesn't have anything like the detrimental impact in me. Eating farts self limiting, on the absence of starchy carbs I eat fat to satiety.

Eating starchy carbs makes me crave more and more, and feel worse and worse.

I first noticed it when I lost weight with slimming world then at Easter had some chocolate. I’d open an egg and couldn’t stop. Then the anxiety would be horrendous and my stomach was awful but I still craved more. I’ve got 4 mince pies left and no one in my house eats them. Wondering whether to bin them

Too much of anything can make you feel ill, it doesn't mean you're intolerant.
No need to cut it out completely just try to stick to the RDA of 30g or less of free sugar a day.

I get raging sugar headaches and always have. Over the years, I ca tolerate less and less without regretting it later on. Especially cakes with icing sugar. It's my body's way of tapping me sternly on the shoulder and asking me if I really want to feel so rough later on for the sake of a brief moment of sugary indulgence.

The solution I've come up with, which may not suit you, is homemade tapenade. Take a tin of black pit-less olives, juice of a lemon, a tablespoon of capers, 3 cloves of garlic and a tin of anchovies and blitz everything for 30 seconds. Add black pepper.

Put it into a tub and store in the fridge. It's absolutely delicious, satisfying mouthfeel, way more satisfying than the brief sugar rush you get and it's really versatile.

If you're feeling nibbly, spread it on a couple of crackers or with some carrot crudites.
If you're feeling in need of comfort, spreak it on nice warm toast.
If you're feeling like there's nothing for dinner AT ALL, mix a tablespoon into some hot pasta.
If you're in need of a quick fix, have a spoon from the tub.

I am aware I sound a little evangelical here.

Thank you. Sounds quite good. With the sugar amounts it’s as though I want to eat more once I’ve had a bit. I had three mince pies yesterday and there’s 3 left. I might bin them. Still got chocolate left but it’s unopened and gone in a cupboard.

Bin them. You will feel better after a couple off days. Christmas type of sugary snacks makes me quite ill. I think it is concentratuon of sugar in them.

I could eat a whole block of butter and feel fine. If I eat sugar, I also get ill and achy feeling.

SIL is very intolerant to sugar.

We've been trained by Big Sugar to think fat is the enemy. It's not. Sugar is the enemy.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/12/2024 15:22

I have binned them. I can feel myself detoxing a bit today. Am going to the gym in a bit. I feel guilty for wasting food but basically I’m also not a dustbin. I’m sure it’s sugar not fats.

Also I heard that the chocolate in Easter eggs has more sugar in to better give it the egg shape. I can eat small amounts of chocolate and not want more but at Easter and Christmas it’s game over.
