Coeliac diagnosis late in life

Is there anyone here (or know anyone) who was diagnosed with coeliac disease at an older age (60+) who managed to recover their digestive health after being gluten free? If so, how long did it take?

50s rather than 60s, but yes. I felt better after 4 or 5 months, and good after a year. Be aware that you might also be sensitive to oats and lactose while your gut heals.

Regardless of age gut healing from coeliacs disease (if you're very strict with your diet and cross contamination etc) can take anywhere from 3-12 months. As pp said very common for a temporary lactose intolerance and oats during the healing process, even GF oats.

Thanks both.

I had switched to lactose free cheese and milk since I went gluten free at the beginning of March. I realised after a while that I couldn’t tolerate lactose free milk either so I switched to calcium fortified vegan “milk”.

I didn’t know that GF oats could still cause problems. I’d been having GF oat cakes instead of bread because GF bread gives me bad bloating. Oh well, no more oat cakes...I’ll just to stick to rice and quinoa for carbs and hopefully start to feel a difference.

I was diagnosed in my early sixties, no digestive problems but hair loss that was caused by an autoimmune disease, discovered via blood tests as coeliac. I had low iron and Vit D as hadn't been absorbing vitamins. Had blood tests a few months after going gluten free and those levels shot up. I also had a DEXA scan as maybe not absorbing calcium, unfortunately I have osteoporosis but at least I can take supplements, meducation and targetted exercise.

Peaceloveandhappiness, I also had a scan recently and found that I have osteoporosis in a small section of my spine. I'm supposed to have a consultation with a rheumatologist soon to discuss treatment options given my current malabsorption symptoms.
