37 weeks pregnant and fanjo is deformed TMI

I am absolutely mortified about this. I woke up with some pains last night and was convinced I was going into labour. I had an uncomfortabe few hours and had some pressure down below so I got a mirror and had a look why why why? You'll have to excuse the description, but one side of my fanjo looks mauled. I have one dd, and had stitches, but things went back to normal afterwards, but now one side of it seems incrediby swollen, almost like something is protruding out on one side It is almost blocking my fanjo. I am now really worried that I won't be able to give birth and that I am deformed somehow. Midwife hasn't started doing internals, but would she mention if something was wrong? I don't know wether to go and get this checked out. I don't know what would be worse, someone saying 'no thats normal', or 'omg look at that!' I could do without feeling so self conscious about my bits when I am about to bear them to all and sundry. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Baby is partly engaged so could it just be pressure?

It'll be a vulval vein or whatever they're called.

poshwellies · 02/05/2008 11:03

Call your midwife and get checked TH,put your mind at rest.

DumbledoresGirl · 02/05/2008 11:04

Could it be a haemorrhoid? Or a partial prolapse?

I know this must be awful for you, but if I were you, I would get myself seen by the MW or a doctor just to find out what it is.

wingandprayer · 02/05/2008 11:05

Yep, like Hecate said. Just down to pressure of baby, makes veins swell same way as you get piles due to pressure. I had a small swelling and disappeared after birth, but check with midwife when you next see her.

TheHorror · 02/05/2008 11:06

I am just so mortified I hate internals at the best of times, but i know I can't leave it as it is, I am really worried about whtever it is getting even worse. I don't know how long it has been like this either.

I meant a vaginal haemorrhoid, obviously. I am sure you are able to tell your fanjo from your backside!

DumbledoresGirl · 02/05/2008 11:08

She probably won't need to do an internal. If you can see something is wrong from the outside, she will be able to too. Hope that makes you feel better.

TheHorror · 02/05/2008 11:13

If it is a prolapse, would it mean a ceasarean? I just can't see how I could give birth with things looking the way they do.

Don't know, but bumping this for you. You really need to see someone and ask them to take a look and tell you what's going on. I know how you're feeling though, (it's the last grumbles and whimpers of your pride and dignaty!)

Eventually, every time you look at the doctors and midwives you are reminded of All Creatures Great And Small. It seems everyone has a feel. By the time you give birth, you have been poked and prodded so much that every time someone walks up to your bed, you automatically lift up your nightie and assume the position (which is a bit much for the cleaner and the poor old bloke who comes round selling the magazines)

Dignity has left the building. In fact, it's left the building, got in a taxi, gone to the airport and is currently well into international waters on its way to the Bermuda Triangle, never to be seen again.

Show your midwife.

Could be vulval varices. Very common. Get your midwife to check it out, she's probably seen them loads of times before.

belgo · 03/05/2008 12:25

and like someone else says, vulval varices do disappear completely some time after birth. They shouldn't effect how you give birth.

But you need your midwife to make a proper diagnosis.

cocolepew · 03/05/2008 12:28

it's very likely a varicose vein, i had them since 20 weeks.

ButterflyMcQueen · 03/05/2008 12:29

just to say try not to worry. everything will be fine and soon you will be beautiful 'all over' once again!

probablyaslytherin · 03/05/2008 16:59

Yes, varicosity of the vulva. I had it and so did a girl in my NCT class - who went straight to A&E when she discovered it then felt v silly when told what it was. Like you - indeed probably all of us - she was v alarmed when she first noticed it.

It is not well covered in the antenatal books, IMO - or it wasn't 15 years ago .

Our NCT teacher said one girl she knew had them hanging like a bunch of grapes!

All will get back to normal after the birth but your midwife will give you an opinion on whether they'll be a problem at the birth. (Mine weren't). Midwives/drs must have seen thousands in their time.

probablyaslytherin · 03/05/2008 17:02

Oh, and I meant to say that like you, it didn't happen with my first ds but did with my second.

Probably gets worse with each subsequent but I can't tell you because I only have the two!

paddycat · 03/05/2008 17:39

Hecate - when my sil was giving birth some years ago, legs in the air and pushing for all she was worth, a man wearing a cap and carrying a satchel wandered in, walked to the window and looked out of it, then wandered out again. My bil asked who he was and was told he was the hospital parking attendant ...
