DS was sick again last night - spectacularly - like a scene out of the exorcist. OK, I'm exaggerating...

when i picked him up from nursery he was fine, but very tired. went home as usual and fed him tea, watched a bit of telly together then bath and bed. settled down ok, i'm downstairs watching telly, he starts crying and is very upset very quickly, so i go racing upstairs, pick him up and walk into our bedroom with him as i can't soothe him, and he projects dinner and his nightime milk EVERYWHERE.

Advice needed - do I have to keep him home today? He woke at 2 and wouldn't settle back to sleep, till I realised he wanted food and he had bread and marmite, which he's kept down. He went back to sleep and slept till morning when first thing he's done is asked for food.

Is it possible he just ate too much for tea last night? He stuffed a big portion of chicken pasta then had 4oz milk?

He just doesn't seem ill. Please don't think I'm a bad mum, I'll stay home with him if he's ill, of course I will...any advice anyone?

yes he needs to stay home for 48hrs.

Projectile vmiting is not caused by overeating.

Furball · 02/05/2008 07:10

stay home - it's not fair on others if it is a bug. Also if he is under the weather he'll want to be at home.

WhatSheSaid · 02/05/2008 07:11

Can you phone the nursery and ask them what their policy on sickness is?

I suspect they will ask you to keep him away today.

WingsofanAngel · 02/05/2008 07:15

Keep him at home. Better than having a call at work and then having to o and get an upset and poorly boy.
Hope he is better soon.

bringmesunshine · 02/05/2008 07:16

No experience of nurseries but I would suggest that they would prefer your DS to recover at home.

He will be happier at home if he is off colour and you would spend all day worrying how he was.

A day at home for you both I feel.

bossybritches · 02/05/2008 07:16

Please don't take him!!!!

calsworld · 02/05/2008 07:17

Policy is 24 hrs, but he seems fine this morning. I thought babies only do projectile vomiting, there is no other type?

He's kept down what he ate overnight and he's had breakfast and is now playing happily .

BB? Why? You think its a bug? Is it possible to be sick without having a bug? Like I say, he really does seem bright and normal.

I am a CM and my policy is at least 24 hours between the last vom episode and returning to me.

Projectile is when stomach goes into spasm and ejects contents because there is something nasty in there.

If he had overeaten it would be more like a slight overflow.

At this stage irrespective of cause you don't know the cause. It is not your judgement - he may well have the shits later today.

You will be breaking your nursery rules by taking him.

amidaiwish · 02/05/2008 07:33

personally, i would take him.

if he seems fine now, eating and playing happily, i would bring him.

make sure you are close by to get him if needed though.

belgo · 02/05/2008 07:36

I wouldn't risk it. If he's still ill and he could be, then it's not pleasant for him to be sent to nursery. And of course there's an infection risk for the other children. It does sound more like a bug then just over eating.

And even if he is geting over it, he will need to rest and have time to get his energy back.

shoshe · 02/05/2008 07:38

Cal as a CM I issue this to all new parents.

calsworld · 02/05/2008 07:49

Thanks for advice everyone, we're staying home. I've never been one to break any rules and I guess I know I shouldn't be taking him in.

He's had a really bad cough and when I phoned nursery to say he'd been sick again, they now tell me (great, cheers) that his cough has been really bad during the daytime and a couple of times he's had a bad coughing fit and they've thought he was going to be sick because of it....
so...
whether its a bug or because of his cough, I figure he needs seeing.

Would have been nice if they'd told me in the handover though.

Don't send him, and I'm shocked art those who would. It's GROSSLY unfair on the other children.

belgo · 02/05/2008 08:02

Yes they should have told you about his cough, although sometimes nurseries are so busy at pick up time I understand why they didn't. You're doing the right thing keeping him home - giving him a chance to recover over the long weekend.

tink123 · 02/05/2008 08:30

i must say I know it is annoying, but dd (5ys) also projectile vomits once in a while cos she eats too much and she has reflux. I still keep her off school to ensure it is not a bug. Annoying things is she is always fine that day and somewhat board but I would like to think other parents did the same.

Blu · 02/05/2008 08:35

Yes, but they can be 'fine' - lively, cheery, bored...and still infectious!

calsworld · 02/05/2008 08:44

Thanks all. Have booked a doc's appt at 11 this morning, his cough has been going on for ages. I took him to see the doctor about it quite a long time ago.

He's 17 months - is is normal for coughs just to go on and on and on?

I wish I knew other people with kids so had some kind of reference point, but glad I've got you lot to keep me on the straight and narrow. Was nearly in tears about this morning - DH just says, ooh, umm, I don't know...

Coughs can hang around for weeks, but it is a good idea to get the doctor to look at him.
