menopause / HRT and endometriosis. What combo?

had posted in menopause but no replies...

Late 40s. One ovary removed. I guess I am menopausal but not sure. Haven't had periods in a while but could be due to the minipill. GP won't blood test as it doesn't matter. Currently on the minipill and horrendous hot flushes.

Consultant suggested to add oestrogen gel the minipill, no need for utrogestan. GP said I would need utrogestan on top. Or take the coil to kill both birds with one stone. Consultant said minipill is better if I am still ovulating in keeping endo in check than coil (as doesn't stop it but given my age, I could give the coil a try.

What do others with a history endo use for HRT? Just really confused by GP and gynae consultant. They said in the end, it's just up to me. I think I would like the coil as I don't have to remember the minipill and the utrogestan. but not sure what's best now from an endo point of few. I am not coping with the hut flushes etc and need HRT. it's non-negotiable. I still have a womb.

Newmans health dr said I should take ustrogen every day if I had endo in the past, not have a break like GP had me doing x

notnorman · 24/12/2024 08:35

So oestrogen gel, 2 sachets every day, 1 progesterone pill and a smear of testosterone

Do you take utrogestan as progesterone?

Would the coil then not tick that box?

I've never heard of using the mini pill on its own when taking oestrogen, if you are on the minipill you normally have to take utrogestan too.

The coil would do for both, that's correct, but I have also seen utrogestan recommended for women with endometriosis even if they've had a hysterectomy. The utrogestan might prevent build up in places it shouldn't, whereas the coil is localised to the womb and has a very small amount of hormone in it, so maybe utrogestan is better in that respect.

I'd look into it more, OP.

Thanks. Doesn't sound like it's the best option for me (coil). Maybe pill and continuous utrogestan

https://www.balance-menopause.com/menopause-library/endometriosis-and-hrt/

There is loads of info out there but it's not always easy to find uk based and scientific. I think I read some info on the British Menopause Soc website or maybe an endometriosis charity. Hope someone else will be along soon. The gynae seems very off saying you don't need an extra progestogen with the mini pill...
