How long to recover?

DH has been ill for about 10 days - seemed very tired but thought it was end of term fatigue. On Wednesday he felt crushing exhaustion and then later, a fever. Thursday night his fever was 39.6c. On Friday morning we saw an Advanced Nurse Practitioner at the surgery who thought he had flu and was going to give him antibiotics in case it had caused a secondary infection and an inhaler. I said I thought he looked quite ill, so she sent us to A&E.

At A&E he was found to have a CRP over 600, lactate of 6, but o2 sats were fairly good, so poorly, but not critical. His chest x-ray showed pneumonia in his right upper lung across the whole lobe. He was badly dehydrated as he wasn't passing urine for a while, but after IV fluids he started to pass urine again. He was admitted to hospital and has been on IV antibiotics, IV fluids, and nebulisers. His CRP has come down to 300 today.

How long is it likely to be before he's fit for work/back to normal? At the moment he's 'ok' as long as he doesn't move. Movement results in coughing fits and exhaustion.

I feel like I should know because I was a nurse, but I worked in ICU so saw the patients who were critically ill with it rather than just 'poorly', which skews the picture!

2-4 weeks to recover. Take care.

Up to 6 week for flu but with pneumonia as well I'd imagine longer.

He tested negative for flu and covid. Just a nasty case of pneumonia. The Consultant today warned him that when he's discharged, he will be going home to continue his recovery and that he won't be 'well'. She's said that she expects he'll need a fit note (he's due back at work on January 6th).

When I had sepsis earlier this year I had absolutely no strength for 2 weeks and then I went back to work on a phased return.

When my elderly Dad with HF had covid and pneumonia the nurses said pneumonia takes longer to get over than covid.

I was admitted for pneumonia back in October. I was signed off work for 5 weeks and it took about 8 weeks in total for me to feel back to normal

Thanks, that's helpful. I'm hoping he'll be discharged in the next few days.
