Shinsplints: What can I do?

Help, have developed shin splints in my left leg. Have really increased the intensity of my running recently and think this is what has caused it.

Sore at the start of run then eases off, then toward the end it is unbearable and i have to stop. Could only manage 25 mins tonight so know I have pushed it.

I'm gutted,. Running race for life next month and this is the first time ever I have comfortarbly been able to run 5k 4 times a week.

Any stretches that will help?
I guess I can still cycle and use cross trainer?

How long off running realistically?

Any other tips?

Thansl

I got them a few yrs ago, turned out my trainers needed replacing.
I also needed to stretch for ages beforehand.

Usual reason for shin splints is too much too soon, or needing new shoes. I would do the bike and cross trainer as long as you don't have pain. Are you running on the treadmill? - maybe swop to the roads or vice versa see if that helps at all.

Otherwise you can join me - I haven't done anything but a powerwalk for two weeks due to a dodgy knee and it's driving me nuts.

Firstly I should say I know very little, but dh runs and I think he would def say rest but also how old are your trainers? Do you think they are still offering you the correct sort of support?
I didn't used to be able to run due to shin pain until a saw a physio about my back who noticed I have flattish feet and rotating heels. He fitted me with some orthotic insoles and the results were magic. I could run again!
Anyway I am sure someone who does actually have experience will be along soon. Commiserations. How very frustrating for you.

Oooh, I am excited some experts agree with me .

I'm excited at being considered an expert!!

Thanks guys.

OK, am really bad at stretching before running. Will remember this. Always do it after though.

Do a mixture of road and treadmill already.

Trainers are 6 months old from up and running - proper running shoes.

2 weeks without running saggars? I'd be going mad too. How long till your fitness declines?

I think it already has. The only good thing is I've cut the booze to compensate.

Take care streching before you run - stretching cold muscles is bad. Short warm up, bit of a stretch, run then a good stretch after.

VanillaPumpkin · 01/05/2008 18:59

It sounds like you have been training hard though. What is your mileage in them do you think?
I bought DH new trainers for Xmas and he had to get more in March as he was doing marathon training and so had been doing the miles. I was gobsmacked but he was getting a few twinges and the new trainers stopped them.
Sagger - .

rEALLY vANILLA? I might pop back to shop with them and see what they say. Thanks.

Could do without shelling out more dosh though!

I know. My dh went to Up and Running too and had his gait analysed etc. He had the perfect trainers for him which was good but they were just beginning to lose the support and it was quite obvious when compared with a new pair but not if you just looked at them on their own. He reckons he had done 300-350 miles in them but he is 14 stone and over 6 ft. It might be worth a trip back to Up and Running to see what they say??
