How do I handle DS2's doctors appointment tomorrow

The GP we are seeing is lovely. I have seen him before when we thought DS2 had tongue tie and he was very supprtive and kind.

I am taking DS2 tomorrow as I have concerns about his hearing. He doesn't always hear me and it isn't child selective deafness as hr doesn't hear me when I say chocolate either.

He was deaf when he was born but passed a newborn hearing test at 2 weeks. At a later date he also had cranio osteopath treatment and he finally settled and he began to hear fine.

The HV hasn't called him for any of his tests so I don't know if he should have had the around 9 month hearing check that his siblings had.

I don't want to cloud the issue by telling him about his newborn experience incase he thinks I am a bit neurotic, but I do have real worries about him.

Any advice please?

TIA.

What do you mean by "he was deaf when he was born"????

That sounds very worrying.

But then he passed the 2 week test?

There is no hearing test at 8-10 months any more if your baby had the newborn test and passed.

Most babies should be seen again by the time they are one year old. What is important is the noises your ds is making. Is he saying syllable noises like "mummumumum" & "dadadad"?

Just tell your GP you are not convinced ds is hearing properly and ask for a referral to audiology.

It's easy - your GP should do it for you with no arguing!

How old is your DS, I just spoke to my HV and asked for a hearing referral and gave her examples of why I thought my dd couldn't hear properly (sitting v close to the TV, mishearing me etc)

He will be 3 in June.

Still concerned about this "deaf when he was born" bit - he should have been followed up by the hospital?

Presumably he can talk - is his speech worse than other children of his age?

The GP will sort it for you I'm sure esp if he has been missed for follow up from the deafness at birth.

Who told you he was deaf when he was born? It seems a rather strange thing to be told and then told something different a few weeks later. The only type of hearing impairment that might disappear this quickly is congestion in the middle ear but I thought the newborn test was for nerve deafness?

Has your son had alot of colds recently. If his hearing seems worse at the moment he may have glue ear- or is it something more than that?

Cranial osteopathy can help with this kind of glue ear hearing impairment( known as conductive deafness)so perhaps you could consider taking him back to the osteopath.

If not I would definitely ask for a referral to an audiology clinic for tests.

Hi

Sorry, I was too upset to post last night and too worried.

When he was born he was very traumatised. He had had a very difficult birth in which we were both at serious risk and he was also one of a set of twins, having lost the other early on.

When he was 2 weeks old we went to Southend hospital for a newborn hearing test as he didn't react to any noise at all. I took him to the GP and he said he would see at the 6 week check. I banged some cycmbals near him and not a flicker. So off we went to Southend. he had the plugs in his ears and it took a bit of time but they passed him as having passed the test, but it was still a good few weeks before we would react to noise.

He had some cranio osteopath treatment after we took him for something else and the osteopath said his body had been in shock due to losing his twin, and the stress of the birth, and that was why he wasn't hearing. That is what I meant about being deaf when born.

He speaks fine but just doesn't always hear me shouting what? what? I have tried saying chocolate to check for selective deafness but not a dicky bird.

Our hospital never knew as they said they didn't do newborn hearing tests.

No colds really. Just a very slight runny nose a fortnight ago. GO checked ears today and crystal clear. Have posted another thread about the appointment.

Always a worry.

So sorry NAB that must have been very traumatic and I can see why you must be worried. When you say you had his ears checked, do you mean tested or just looked at?

If you are still worried I would ask for an audiology referral back to Southend. Their audiology department is very good (lots of my pupils go there as the UHI I work in is quite near to Southend)
How old is DS now?

NotABanana · 02/05/2008 13:40

The GP looked in his ears. Said they were clear so I am assuming no build up of wax. I took his older brother when he was bout 3 and he had to have a ball of wax flushed out. I had also had trouble getting him to hear me too.

We have a private appointment for next Thursday so have to find £180 now. [worried]

Ds will be 3 in June.

I don't understand have you asked for a hearing test and they've refused? With my 3 youngest I have asked (demanded?) a hearing test because they were clearly not always hearing properly.

2 have had significant glue ear one mild. My health visitor referred me to early years audiology where they carried out proper hearing tests.

I shall go look for your other thread.

seeker · 02/05/2008 21:12

I'm sorry you've had such a difficult time. I don't really understand why you have to have a private hearing test. I had concerns about my ds's hearing. I told the dr, who referred us to tha audiology department at the hospital straight away. Have you asked for a NHS referral?

NotABanana · 02/05/2008 22:03

The GP told me to see the HV and if that didn't work to see the nurse, he would then refer us to a specialist if that was no good. The HV wouldn't help and I was too upset to do anything else tbh.
