I need to go to urgent care, don’t I

I have a wound that has become infected. I’ve tried antibacterial gel, keeping it clean, changing bandaging and it isn’t getting better. I have a phobia about hospitals after a bad experience but I just need to knuckle down and call 111 for a referral, don’t I?

that is good to know

You've done the right thing
Can't risk it getting worse over Christmas time
Hope you're seen soon

Well done for going OP. That sort of thing can get really nasty if not seen to.

Thank you again everyone, I’m back now. Took about 3 hours and left with a prescription to take antibiotics 4x a day. One thing though…when he was entering things into my file he stopped and said ‘oh wow’ to himself. What do you mean ‘oh wow’?! What is in there that makes someone go ‘oh wow’ 😂 I don’t think I want to know…

You said yourself you have a phobia about hospitals due to a bad experience, so maybe there's something referring to it in your notes?

RosesAndHellebores · 21/12/2024 13:03

I'm glad you got it seen to. I hope you recover swiftly. A couple of things:

  1. You can request a full copy of your notes.
  1. As you are on AB's, it might be worth getting a canastan tablet from the pharmacy for thrush asbits Xmas and you don't want to have that over the holidays. The ones for skin infections/insect bites usually set me off.

Glad you got seen OP, the last thing you want is to become seriously ill over Christmas and you shouldn't take any risks with infections.
I'm feeling a bit anxious myself at present as I had an operation yesterday and I got a serious post op infection after I had something similar done a few years ago. I'm absolutely fine but am a bit worried that something will start over the bank holidays. With hindsight I wish I hadn't had it done so close to Christmas but I've been waiting quite a long time and it's been cancelled once already.
Hopefully you'll see some improvement over the weekend but don't be shy about going back if it gets worse or isn't getting better after a few days of the tablets. When I had my post op infection I was given oral antibiotics but still deteriorated and had to be readmitted for intravenous ones and ultimately more surgery. I don't want to scare you, I'm sure tablets work just fine for most people, but just do keep a careful eye on things as I found out the hard way that sometimes more can be needed,
Hope you get well soon and it's all cleared by Christmas.

The “oh wow” could very easily be about his thoughts on a previous doctor’s decision/plan rather than about you. Doctors sometimes disagree with each others plans in private but not ideal for him to say that out loud in front of you without explanation ! I wouldn’t give it too much thought. Hope you feel better soon
